Facebook’s Real Scalability Problem

Want to scale a system which can handle over 300 million monthly users, approximately half of which are logging in daily? It’s not an easy task however Facebook has managed to pull off an impressive feat but as many users are noticing: not everything is working as it should. The primary problems exist for the minority, yet rapidly growing population, of hyper-connected individuals who have thousands of contacts. So what’s going wrong?

Facebook Scales Horizontally
Facebook has been the most effective platform so far for attracting a large volume of users on a global scale. In an interview with Fast…

Facebook Announces 300 Million Milestone And Cash Flow Positive

Facebook has announced today that the company has reached 300 million users and that they are cash flow positive. This is huge news for the company who was previously on track to surpass 300 million by the end of the year. Just a month and a half ago the company surpassed 250 million users which means that they are still gaining over 5 million new users a week. Also included in the announcement was that Facebook is now officially cash flow positive, something previously expected to take place in 2010.

That Facebook is able to continue this growth and build…

What Developers And Marketers Need To Know About Facebook’s New Inbox And Notification APIs

This afternoon Facebook is announcing an extended set of features for developers including a new Inbox API and Notification API. The first announcement is a big one: “The Inbox API allows you to access your users’ messages, once they grant your application the new read_mailbox extended permission.” That means we could soon see a ton of new applications built around managing users’ Facebook inboxes. The one downside of this new feature is that applications cannot currently send messages.

What’s Being Added?
As part of the new inbox, attachments can be created using the same model used for developing publisher attachments…

Facebook Experiencing Serious Downtime Issues

Want to browse Facebook to see what your friends are doing or to catch up on to harvest your farms on FarmVille? Good luck! Over the past 24 hours I’ve been receiving numerous emails from users reporting that many features on Facebook have been unavailable. I’ve also been experiencing problems. This morning I tried to load my friend requests page and it just failed. On the AllFacebook page I tried viewing comments and likes of one of the posts and an AJAX error popped up.

Facebook doesn’t appear to be the only site having issues however. Twitter has been down…

How To Attract 3,000 Fans in 30 Days

I previously wrote about the launch of a series on “How to Attract 3,000 Fans in 30 Days”. Almost 1,000 people registered for the program but it ended up taking much longer to create the content than I had thought it would. Thankfully I have now completed the guide and starting this week, I will begin posting the full series. While this series will be published on the site, there will be numerous ways to access the content including a downloadable e-book as well as a new course that I’ll be offering through New Media School.

So what does the…

All Facebook Is Now Available In French

Earlier this year I began receiving a lot of inquiries about translating the site into other languages. I’ve been forced to put off the launch since I was busy working on other stuff but last week I finally got around to launching the French version of AllFacebook. Right now I am being helped by the team over at KRDS. This is more of an experiment than anything else but I’m pretty excited to expand internationally.

We’ve also had a number of other people reach out about producing a translated version of the site. If you are interested in creating a…

Chinese Government Shuts Down Facebook

Facebook is being blocked in China over the Urumqi clashes.
Rediya Kadeer, president of the World Uighur Congress, explained “social media is critical to the Uighurs’ cause” in an exclusive AllFacebook interview earlier this week. Facebook wall posts were used to spread news after Twitter shut down in Urumqi, China, AllFacebook reported Sunday.

China’s shutdown of Facebook is part of a larger social media trend where citizens are denied access to Facebook and Twitter as a means of enforcing state control over media. Google was also targeted in dramatic fashion on Chinese TV recently, when Google’s “autosuggest” search functionality was…

Rebiya Kadeer, Accused “Mastermind” Of Urumqi Protests, Speaks About Impact Of Social Media

Uighur women protested through the streets of Urumchi yesterday. According to the BBC, Uighur women and men were not armed and pleaded with the Chinese police force to release their sons, husbands, and fathers who were taken after Sunday’s riots. It’s reported that over 1,400 Uighurs were imprisoned in what has become the biggest protest in China since Tienanmen Square. Just hours after the Uighur protests, Han Chinese took to the streets. Witnesses say many carried knives, sticks, meat cleavers and wanted revenge.
What seems to have fallen through the cracks in main stream media is why these people are…

Facebook Launches New Granular Publisher Controls, Transforms Personal Publishing

Today Facebook officially launched a beta version of the new publisher controls which enables users to publish to anybody. You can set custom privacy settings for every single post that you publish to your stream, making granular privacy settings even more widespread. Want to publish to everybody on Facebook? Now you can. Perhaps you only want to make a story visible to your friends that are in your “Family” friend list. That’s possible as well.

This is a direct attack on Twitter who currently has two options: public and private. This is honestly a huge move forward for publishing information.…

Interview With fbFund Winner NutshellMail

Last week we got the opportunity to speak with the team behind NutshellMail, a recent fbFund winner. NutshellMail enables users to manage all of their social network email accounts through one system. I took the time to sign up last week and I have to admit that the service is pretty slick. I actually don’t use multiple social networks to manage my contacts (although I still occasionally log in to LinkedIn), but many users have distributed contacts across many networks making this product extremely useful. Check out my interview with founders Mark Schmulen and David Lyman below.
