How To Use Facebook Applications To Boost Your Fan Base

This is Day 13 of the 30 Days to 3,000 Fans program. You can learn more about the program here.
The Facebook platform presents an amazing opportunity for companies to expand their presence quickly by enabling viral distribution through the social graph. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that viral distribution does not necessarily mean more customers. Many businesses become easily distracted with mind-boggling numbers. “If I get millions of users to my application, I only need one percent to purchase my product!” Unfortunately things aren’t that simple, especially considering that most Facebook users are…

Largest Facebook Game FarmTown Goes Down, Run For The Hills!

FarmTown users have been going crazy this afternoon as the application has become inaccessible to millions of users around the world. FarmTown is currently the most popular game on Facebook according to daily active users and it continues to grow at around 2 percent, or upwards of 300,000 new users per day. How To Turn The Facebook Fan Box Into A Button According To Facebook’s Terms

This morning I wrote a short tutorial about how to create a fan button from within your Connect-enabled site. According to Facebook however, the code that we posted was technically against their terms and they asked us to remove the post. CSS hacks, while possible, are something that Facebook wants to avoid and having a page which explains how to do a simple hack could set a bad precedent.

As such I’ve gone ahead and removed the post even though any competent developer will know how to isolate the button. Instead they would prefer that you use the fan box…

Facebook’s New iPhone Application Adds Events

Yesterday Joe Hewitt posted screenshots of the new Facebook iPhone application which is expected to be released in the next couple weeks . What’s most important is the addition of events which was missing from the previous two versions. Joe claims that everybody is asking for push notifications but with thousands of contacts on the site, I’m honestly fine without it! Additionally the most recent version of the news feed will be turned on, making the old iteration of the news feed inaccessible.

Joe has been the sole programmer working on this project since the beginning. One product that’s still…

Facebook Officially Expands Album Limits From 60 To 200

Trying to upload more than 60 photos from that recent trip you went on? Up until recently it wasn’t possible. While some users were reporting back in January that the limit had been raised up to 175 photos, Facebook had no official announcement then. Earlier today Chris Putnam posted on the Facebook blog that the company was now able to officially raise the album limit up to 200 photos thanks to the new Haystack storage system.

Rather than simply purchasing more servers (which the company has been doing also), the Facebook development team has been more heavily focused on making…

Mobitel Launches Facebook Television Ad Campaign

This morning I stumbled across an interesting video of a Sri Lankan television ad in which Mobitel is promoting their new service which provides Facebook support. Interestingly enough it doesn’t appear that Mobitel is offering anything unique in that it simply integrates through Facebook’s mobile interface. I couldn’t tell you if Facebook was invested in this campaign or not but it appears that Mobitel is not the largest mobile provider in Sri Lanka.

Currently Facebook has over 220,000 users in Sri Lanka, which has a population of around 20 million. The style of the ad is pretty interesting in that…
