@You Can Now Tag Users, Pages, And Apps On Facebook

Last week we wrote about Facebook’s new tagging functionality but as of this afternoon the feature finally went live. While the functionality is no different than initially described, many users are finding that this transforms the overall user experience. There are also many objects on Facebook which still can’t be tagged with applications and pages such as photos. You also can’t include tags within Facebook messages but I’d expect more robust tagging functionality to be added over the coming weeks and months.

So does this new functionality eliminate the need for Twitter? No, but it most definitely helps users to…

Apple gives c64 emulator the boot

After making it to the top 20 in most regions, Apple has removed the c64 emulator for the iPhone from the App Store. Apparently the thorough app review process didn’t discover that the BASIC system had not been removed from the app, but was instead merely hidden.
Another revision of the emulator has been submitted for review but how long will that take?  What is the review process for if they’re not looking deep enough to find specific functions they don’t want an app to have? Approving apps and pulling them a few days later is another Hot Coffee…

Facebook Updates Advertising Terms, Displaying User Data Will Require Explicit Authorization

Facebook posted their updated advertising terms last night and ultimately nothing was really that surprising. As far as I can tell, the only addition to the terms was around data and privacy. As previously was the case, developers cannot give any data received from Facebook to any third party. Additionally advertisements that include user data “such as users’ names or profile pictures” will require explicit authorization from Facebook.

So what does that mean? It could mean that many of the ad networks that currently exist on the platform and have good relationships with Facebook could continue to display user information.…

Facebook Releases FQL.multiquery

If you’re a developer you’ll know that one of the most important things to making efficient code is to reduce your code’s dependency on SQL queries. Rather than running 1,000 SQL “INSERT” queries for 1,000 individual items for example, it’s better to batch those items into a single “INSERT” statement. There are other methods that can be used to improve query performance as well including general query batching in which multiple queries are batched into a single request.

Last night Facebook announced a pretty cool upgrade which is FQL.multiquery. The service enables developers to batch multiple queries into a single…

Facebook Shuts Down SocialReach For Violating Platform Terms

Last night Facebook took aggressive action to stop the increased level of application Facebooks ads that are in violation of Facebook’s terms by shutting down SocialReach. As I’ve been covering for the past few days, the volume of spam ads on Facebook have been increasing over the past few weeks. Some developers have even been reporting substantial jumps in revenue from these ad networks which is understandable considering how aggressive the ads are. Around midnight last night the company sent out the following letter to all publishers:

Monday, June 8th, 2009
Facebook Publishers:
Due to circumstances beyond our control we…

Interview with fbFund Winner MyChurch

MyChurch, the winner of the most recent fbFund incubator program, has undergone a lot of changes this year. A relaunch of its application a few weeks back and the participation in fbFund ‘09 has provided a wealth of opportunity for the MyChurch team, as they find useful ways in which to create an application around existing faith-based organizations that need additional social networking tools. I had an opportunity to interview Joe Suh, CEO of MyChurch, who speaks on the relaunch of the application, as well as being a winner of the fbFund.

Kristen Nicole: What is your MyChurch application all…

Facebook To Launch New Application Directory And Application Profile Pages

Many developers have been rushing to create public profile pages for their applications when the new public profiles launched over a month ago. It appears that developers will no longer need to worry about having separate public profiles from their application page. Today Facebook will announce the launch of an updated version of application profile pages in addition to the redesign of the application directory.
Here are a few of the coming updates:

Improved Categories: Facebook has decided to change the categories that developers are allowed to use for their applications. While many of the previous ones will continue to…

There’s well over 10 billion photos on Facebook, making it the largest photo-sharing site on the web. Now that’s a lot of people tagging each other.
