We picked up a great Firefox bookmark tip from [Colin]. He wanted an easier way to look up bug numbers on the launchpad bug tracker. Because the url is always the same with the bug number at the end of the address, he replaced the final portion of the url with %s. Now, when he types the keyword followed by the bug number in the address bar the bug page loads right up.
We don’t do all that many bug searches but it’s immediately obvious that this can be useful in a lot of ways. In the photo above…

Facebook Now Providing Ad Click Estimates
Want to know how many people will click on the new Facebook ad that you are creating? Now you can. Over the past few weeks Facebook has been testing out advertisement click estimates for campaigns and it appears it is back. While it doesn’t work for all campaigns, it’s an extremely useful feature. However it appears that there are still a few bugs.
In the process of creating one of my own ad campaigns I found that reducing my ad’s click bid would result in an increased volume of clicks. Does that really make much sense? Not really unless Facebook…
Ubuntu repository crash-course
[Alan] has just posted an Ubuntu screencast that will take you through a crash course in the Ubuntu repositories. If you are new to Ubuntu this will give you a much better grasp on how software repositories are handled.
The different types of updates are discussed: Security updates fix bugs that cause a system vulnerability. Updates (generic) are for bug fixes that aren’t a security threat. Proposed updates are for testing before an update hits the ‘updates’ section. Finally, backports are updates from a newer version that have been ‘backported‘ so systems running older versions of Ubuntu can have…
Bus Pirate updates: preorder 2 and v3
We’ve had a barrage of questions regarding when the second preorder of the Bus Pirate would ship. As you know, shipment was delayed by a shortage of PIC processors. [Ian] let us know this morning that the chips have arrived at Seeed Studio, manufacture has begun, and we should see shipments going out within a week.
New firmware is also available that takes care of the nasty I2C bug that existed in firmware before v2.1. Make sure you get your hands on the latest copy and follow the instructions in the manual for flashing.
Finally, [Ian] informed us that…

Hackers Another Day
On the eve of the Black Hat security conference, malicious hackers posted a 29,000-line file detailing embarrassing attacks that took complete control of servers and websites run by several high-profile security researchers, including Dan Kaminsky and Kevin Mitnick.
The file posted on security mailing lists claimed to have obtained more than four years’ worth of data from Kaminsky, and as proof, it offered a smattering of emails, instant messages, and other communications that laid out sensitive research work and intimate personal conversations. It also revealed multiple passwords Kaminsky used and back-end configurations for Kaminsky’s website (doxpara.com), which was yanked offline…
