Earlier this year we were amazed when University of California researchers controlled a beetle via electrical implants. The video available at the time of the original report showed beetles tethered in place while electrical stimuli was applied via the chip. New video of free flight is has now been posted. Although the motion is rather sporadic, it is obvious that simple commands to start flight, stop flight, and turn left or right are having their intended effect. Check out this cyborg action after the break. Is DARPA one step closer to unleashing legions of insect warriors on unsuspecting masses?…

Photographic key duplication
[Ben] and his associates over at the University of California at San Diego came up with a way to duplicate keys using a picture of them. They developed an algorithm that uses measurements from known key blanks to extrapolate the bitting code. Because the software is measuring multiple points it can correct the perspective of the photo when the key is not photographed on a flat surface, but from an angle.
They went so far as to test with cell phone cameras and using a telephoto lens from 195 feet away. In most cases, correct keys were produced within…

Ebay is Boring Compared to New Electronics Auction
Burbank, California – Muulu (muulu.com) is growing in popularity as a cheaper alternative to eBay. Why? Because the average winning bid for new electronics items, like iPhones, game systems, and iPods, is substantially lower on Muulu than on Ebay. People pay for bids. These payments buy down the possible winning price of the item being auctioned until it is won for well below wholesale price. Other electronic items include HDTVs, laptops, desktop computers, and GPS systems.
The biggest thing that draws people to Muulu is the insane deals. People can win a new Apple iPod Touch for $90, a new…
China Discusses Taking Stake in AES
The Chinese government’s investment arm is in talks on taking a minority stake in Virginia-based power-plant developer AES Corp., according to people familiar with the matter. The possible purchase is part of a wide-ranging discussion aimed at building an alliance between AES and China Investment Corp., the country’s sovereign wealth fund, with some $300 billion in assets. The discussions could result in CIC taking a significant stake in AES, which has a market capitalization of about $9.5 billion. A joint venture between the two parties also is under discussion, in which CIC would contribute capital to AES’s plans to develop…
Failure of Corus Bank puts condo loans up for sale
Author : jigneshChicago’s Corus Bank, which made a disastrous bet on condo towers in South Florida, was closed by federal regulators on Friday. MB Financial Bank of Chicago is assuming Corus Bank’s 11 branches and $3 billion in cash and marketable securities. That would leave about $4 billion more in assets, which the FDIC plans to sell within 30 days in a private placement. Corus has about $1 billion of loans in South Florida. There has been speculation that Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross might be interested in acquiring the Corus property. Ross is CEO of New York real…
Why You Should Attend This Year’s Engage Expo!
As most readers know, I typically refrain from promoting conferences on this site (aside from my own Social Ad Summit confernece) but later this month I’ll be heading out to California to attend the Engage! Expo. The event has a large number of social web industry executives speaking and attending which is why I’ve decided to go to this one. September through November is a busy season for conferences, however I try to limit the number I attend as you can spend all year going to events and never get any work done!
With the sheer number of people attending…
New Facebook Privacy Policies Will Have A Significant Impact On Platform Applications
As a result of a new privacy agreement with Canada, Facebook has issued statements suggesting that there could be major platform changes ahead for developers. In a blog post this morning, Ethan Beard suggests that users may have to explicitly opt-in to granting profile information. This news comes as Facebook is under increasing scrutiny from privacy advocates including the California ACLU chapter which has released a new quiz application to inform users of what data applications have access to.
In a blog post on the Facebook developers blog today, Ethan Beard writes:
When users authorize an application, they will have…
Franchising Vs. Licensing A Business (Franchise Vs. License) And Business Opportunity Expansion Options
What’s the difference between franchising vs. licensing a business? The starting point in the franchising vs. licensing a business analysis is to consider the legal aspects, then the business aspects. In considering the legal aspects, begin with the following premise that applies to both options. If you put someone into business (or allow them to use your business name/mark) this transaction will normally be a regulated activity, subject to substantial penalties for noncompliance. This guiding legal principle, coupled with the business aspects of selling a franchise vs. a license (discussed below) will answer most franchise vs. license questions. Advice from…

Chinese Government Shuts Down Facebook
Facebook is being blocked in China over the Urumqi clashes.
Rediya Kadeer, president of the World Uighur Congress, explained “social media is critical to the Uighurs’ cause” in an exclusive AllFacebook interview earlier this week. Facebook wall posts were used to spread news after Twitter shut down in Urumqi, China, AllFacebook reported Sunday.
China’s shutdown of Facebook is part of a larger social media trend where citizens are denied access to Facebook and Twitter as a means of enforcing state control over media. Google was also targeted in dramatic fashion on Chinese TV recently, when Google’s “autosuggest” search functionality was…
How To Sell Weed On Facebook
Typically we create guides to discuss how to build a fan base or attract more users to your application but I figured today would be a great day to explain how to distribute illicit drugs using Facebook! Alright, maybe that’s not what this article is completely about but apparently, “Some California pot sellers are misusing social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter for selling marijuana.”
A “Los Angeles-based non-profit medical-marijuana dispensary Artists Collective” has decided to start promoting their services through social media including the free delivery of marijuana orders. While Northern California versions of these pot selling collectives…
