Insurance companies gained Rs 41k crore on bourses in a yr

The global financial crisis might have created an upheaval in the local stock markets, but domestic insurance companies gained a whopping Rs 40,942 crore in the bourses during the one-year period between August 21, 2008 and August 21 this year. During the period, the market capitalisation of bank stocks held by insurance companies increased 103.2% to Rs 43,097 crore on August 21, 2009, from Rs 21,212 crore recorded in the year-ago period. Defcon 17: Badge hacking

Following up on their post about the new Defcon 17 badges, Wired recently posted some of the best badge hacks of the con. Among the hacks featured were an LED frequency meter hack, a sound seeking dirigible powered by three badges, and a wireless geiger counter random number generator that sent random numbers back to a laptop equipped with a zigbee card. This classic regenerative tube radio, modeled after an early 20th century homebrew is complete with schematic and additional photos. Capacitive discharge spot welder update

It seems one of our commenters took great umbrage with [PodeCoet] not documenting his capacitive discharge cutting properly. [PodeCoet] had been waiting till he got the full spot welder working before publishing, but he’s expedited the work after all our whining. Check out his full writeup of the device in its current state. It uses a 1Farad audio cap for storage. A dsPIC monitors all of the voltage sources and regulates charging. A nice touch is the tactile switch on the electrode.

Just in time for the influx of sedentary Oprah viewers, [Adam Wilson] built a brain interface that allows you to post Twitter messages. The electrode cap monitors the user’s brain functions to determine where they’re looking. The display slowly flashes each letter in the alphabet. The user focuses on the letter they want and when it flashes the cap can pick up the resulting impulse.
