[Ben] and his associates over at the University of California at San Diego came up with a way to duplicate keys using a picture of them. They developed an algorithm that uses measurements from known key blanks to extrapolate the bitting code. Because the software is measuring multiple points it can correct the perspective of the photo when the key is not photographed on a flat surface, but from an angle.
They went so far as to test with cell phone cameras and using a telephoto lens from 195 feet away. In most cases, correct keys were produced within…

Disabling your cell phone’s mic for security
[Dan] set up this simple cell phone hack to disable his microphone when he’s not using his cell phone. He had read that the government can listen to you using your cell phone, even when it is off. This concerned him enough to hack into his phone. He removed the expansion port and wired the microphone to a magnetic reed switch. A strong magnet located in the screen side of his flip phone opens the circuit when he closes the phone. He notes that you could always just pop the battery out of your phone, but then you are…
Key gene ‘controls disease fight’
It causes stem cells in the blood to become disease-fighting “Natural Killer” (NK) immune cells. It is hoped the discovery will lead to new ways to boost the body’s production of these frontline cells – potentially creating a new way to kill cancer. The Nature Immunology study may also help development of new treatments for type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis. These conditions are caused by a malfunctioning immune system turning against the body’s own tissues, and it is suspected that faulty NK cells play a key role in this process. The researchers, from Imperial College London, University College London…
Xbox speeds up research results
Academics at the University of Warwick believe they are the first to use the processors as a cheap way to conduct “parallel processing”. Parallel computing is where a number of processors are run in tandem, allowing a system to rapidly crunch data. Researchers traditionally have to book time on a dedicated “cluster” system or splash out setting up a network of PCs. Instead, the Warwick team harnessed a single Xbox 360 Graphical Processing Unit (GPU). The chip was able to perform parallel processing functions at a fraction of the cost a traditional systems. Dr Simon Scarle, a researcher on the…

I-Swarm robot update
Back in October we reported on the I-Swarm robotics project. [Travis] sent us some more information. These tiny robots are programmed optically and are able to respond to programming commands via an infrared signal. Locomotion is facilitated with piezoelectric actuators and the power to the units provided through a solar cell. It is not clear that this project is still ongoing as the I-Swarm web page lists a project termination date of 6/31/2008. That being said, the video embedded after the break was posted two days ago showing swarm movement and detailing the programming, testing, and hardware specifics.
