Verizon passing on the Pre after all?

If a report from TheStreet.com has it right, Verizon won’t be picking up the Palm Pre after all. Showcased at this year’s CES, Palm’s flagship phone garnered quite the following, and was praised as a potential iPhone killer. Just prior to its official debut on Sprint’s network in June, Verizon said it would offer the smartphone within six months.Sprint replied by saying it held exclusive rights to the Pre through 2009, which left most with the impression that the handset would be available via Verizon in January 2010. Palm’s CEO Jon Rubinstein recently fueled that anticipation when he said the…

Changes To Student Loan Payments Scrapped

Wellington, Sept 22 NZPA – Changes that would have seen students paying off their student loan in their holidays have been scrapped. Currently people with student loans have to make repayments if they earn over $19,084 a year. The changes would have switched the threshold to weekly, fortnightly or monthly, in line with an individual’s pay period. The total yearly threshold will remain unchanged, however students who work full time during the holidays may have found themselves over the $367 weekly threshold and having to make payments while they save for the year ahead. Revenue Minister Peter Dunne said the…

YoVille Achieves Record Daily Traffic Numbers Despite Protests

Over the weekend I wrote about the “massive protests” taking place in Zynga’s virtual world YoVille. I kind of poked at the protesters in the article because they are the vocal minority. When you’re in the midst of a protest it appears as if everybody is protesting. The new changes were controversial for those users who had spent time and money on the game over the past year or two. The main issue was that users are now forced to return to the game on a timed basis in order to earn revenue. I’m still not convinced it’s an unfair…

Virtual Protests Erupt In YoVille

YoVille, one of the largest virtual worlds on Facebook, recently experienced a relatively large protest against a major change yesterday which modified the way users can earn virtual currency. Previously, users entered a widget factory from where they could earn coins. While users can still earn coins there is a new process in which users must spend money to make money (as is typical in the real world). A number of users are furious and in the past few hours I’ve received numerous users frustrated with the change.

The position of the users was that less money was being generated…

Touch sensitive keypad

[Viacheslav] built a keypad that uses human capacitance to detect key presses. Unlike normal keys which close a physical connection, his project detects touch through the PCB substrate. He uses the ADC capabilities of an AVR ATmega8 to measure a change in capacitor charges for each sensor in the keypad.
He’s posted the schematic, Eagle files, and source code with his writeup. He also points to a document on the theory behind this: QMatrix Technology White Paper (PDF). We’re impressed at how simple the circuit is: a microcontroller, capacitors, resistors, and a homemade PCB.

Lack Of Flexibility Stalls Mid-market SAP Project

With six million dollars already invested, this commercial property company was being more than reasonable. Their SAP implementation had stalled in the blueprint phase due to a business requirement specific to their industry.
SAP was called in to review the design. They recommended a change that had the support of several key team members. But the system integrator was unwilling to embrace the proposed change. They were following a static work plan and the change would have required significant rework.
The problem with predefined implementation plans is that they are inherently inflexible, and they tend to keep users at a…

Zimbabwean minister denounces EU

Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa said the EU delegation had sided with Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai. Mr Chinamasa said the EU had fallen “line, hook and sinker” for everything Mr Tsvangirai had told them. The EU refused to lift sanctions on Mr Mugabe and his top aides, citing a lack of progress over human rights. Long-time rivals Mr Tsvangirai and Mr Mugabe signed a power-sharing agreement a year ago, after a disputed election. But Mr Tsvangirai accuses Mr Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party of continuing to persecute members of his former opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Mugabe’s early optimismAfter the EU delegation…

Why settle for the standard home icon on your browser? If your home button brings you to hackaday.com, why not make the icon reflect that destination? This hack is quick and simple. We’ll take you through it using Firefox 3 and the default theme with standard sized icons.
We start by using our favorite graphics program to make an icon that is 24×24 pixels, and then saved is as a PNG file without compression.
To use the new image as a home icon, we edited a Cascading Style Sheet which is stored in the file classic.jar. On Ubuntu 9.04,…

Take command of your BASH prompt

[Joshua] has put together a list of BASH prompt customizations. The command prompt is used in a command-line interface to show that the system is ready for the next command. Often times this is nothing more than a user name, host name, and working directory:
mike@krusty:~$
[Joshua's] customization examples can be used to color code the information in your prompt, change what information is displayed, and make the prompt respond differently when an invalid command is typed. A BASH prompt reference is helpful in deciphering what each of these commands do. The easiest simplification is to understand that non-printing…
