Facebook Declares War On Spam Developers
Facebook is getting aggressive with a few developers who have been abusing the platform. Today the company alerted us to a “substantial” policy enforcement against the developers behind My Calendar, one of the largest Facebook applications. MyCalendar has been temporarily disabled and hundreds of other applications have been permanently shut down. According to Facebook, the developers have been engaging in misleading and spammy tactics in order to get more users rather than building valuable experiences.
The My Calendar developers have been making aggressive applications for a long time now. Back in May I questioned how the developers’ applications were growing…
E-bike across Canada for $10
[Justin Lemire-Elmore] spent one month riding his electric bike across Canada last summer. He made the journey from Vancouver to Halifax in 30 days using a mere $10 worth of electricity to recharge his bike. He put together a rather bizarre looking semi-recumbent bicycle to hold all of his gear. The motor controller, charge controller, battery packs, and lighting system were all his own design. He has a captivating 2 hour presentation embedded below in which he describes all the problems he had with his equipment during the trip as well as all the great experiences the journey offered.

An Organized Facebook: An Impossible Feat?
Over the past two weeks I’ve been going through the process of simplifying and organizing my life so that it’s more manageable. While the “work/life balance” (or whatever you’d like to call it) issue always arises, I personally believe it’s important to keep yourself organized. One area where many people are disorganized is there Facebook contacts. I’ve personally boiled down my personal organization to a few items: email, calendar, tasks, documents, and contacts. Facebook should be efficient at effectively managing my contacts/relationships (something I expounded on earlier this week).
Our Diverse Network Of Contacts
I was in college when Facebook…
Capacitance sensor guide (AD7746)
[Marcus] has written up his experiences using the AD7746 capacitance sensor. He used the SparkFun breakout board in conjunction with an Arduino. The available Arduino code wasn’t that great so he rewrote it to be easier to understand. The AD7746 is an I2C device that can be continuously read, but this doesn’t mesh well with the Wiring libraries. Additionally, the calibration routine from the data sheet is difficult to understand. He’s included all of the code he used plus a Processing sketch to help visualize the input which will hopefully make your experience with the chip much more smooth.…
Brain Buddies Remixes Popular Brain Teaser Application, Experiences Rapid Growth
They say imitation is the biggest form of flattery, so Playfish should be pretty flattered by German-based Wooga’s latest game: Brain Buddies. The application takes a similar approach to “Who Has the Biggest Brain?” but provides new forms of brain teasers. There are four alternative challenges, one of which is almost identical to one of the challenges in Playfish’s competing application. Right now the most popular strategy for success in the social gaming arena appears to be copy others and then promote.
The result has been multiple legal battles although none of them have resulted in any game changing decision…
Happy 2nd Birthday to AllFacebook
I’m happy to say that today is the two year anniversary of the launch of AllFacebook. What started as a mission of building a popular site has turned into a full blown obsession for me. We’ve been tracking new applications, new features, and theorizing about future features to be added to the site. The site had around 20 million users when we first started and has now grown to over 325 million users. This site now has over 2,078 articles, 284 of which have been posted by other people (Anthony LaFauce, Kristen Nicole, Will M, and many others), 1,794 of…
What is the Secret to Happiness During Hard Times? by: Traliece N. Bradford
We are currently living in times where things seem to be overwhelmingly hopeless. Even when you try to have a good day there is always something or someone that consistently reminds you how much (fill in the blank here) is so horrible. Fortunately, there is a secret that is surprisingly simple and works so well it has changed many lives including mine. That secret is called Gratitude or may be known to others as “Giving Thanks”.The corny cliché during the Thanksgiving holiday is true-“Don’t just wait for Thanksgiving Day to be thankful. Let’s be full of thanks everyday.” This is…
Install Windows 7 on your netbook
No one will ever accuse us of being Windows fanboys; we’re certainly fans of netbooks though (or anything cheap enough that we don’t care if we accidentally burn a hole through it). We’ve heard from quite a few friends that Windows 7 is actually an excellent operating system to run on a netbook and is a dream compared to XP. Gizmodo has compiled a guide to getting the release candidate on your lightweight machine. It’s available now and will work for free for a year. The image is 2.36GB which you need to dd onto a USB device. They…
