Facebook Preparing To Resize Profile Photos

If you have a creative Facebook profile photo take note as Facebook will be resizing the size of profile photos in the “next few weeks”. Additionally Facebook is increasing the max size of photos that can be uploaded, which I would assume means there are some upgrades in the works for the Facebook Photos application.

The new photo size is most likely a result of the impending design changes which will go beyond the homepage. While the homepage is getting a relatively significant overhaul, profiles and Facebook Pages are also being condensed. Page tabs are being shrunk from 760 pixels…

How To Block Facebook Pillow Fight Wall Posts

Last week we covered the ongoing wall spam problem on Facebook with the Pillow Fight application being one of the primary sources of the spam. We weren’t aware that there’s a way to block the spam, however the developer of the Pillow Fight application commented on our story and provided directions for turning off pillow fight wall posts. We explain how to block the wall posts from Pillow Fight below.

Prior to our explanation, I thought it would be important to emphasize that this is not a resolution for blocking all wall spam. Unfortunately Facebook doesn’t have a way to…

Facebook Releases Their Version Of Retweets As Twitterfication Continues

This evening Facebook began testing what appears to be their version of Twitter’s retweet feature: “via”. On any article shared by your friend, you can click on “Share” and when you post the article to your profile, Facebook will now automatically say who the article came from. While the “via” content only currently works on shared articles, I’d assume that this feature would be extended to other stream stories if initial user testing proves successful. We’ve written extensively about the Twitterfication of Facebook, and this appears to be one more step in that process.

As pictured below, users are able…

Facebook Finally Lets User Reply To Comments Via Email

We have received countless emails about Facebook testing comment replies via email for the past few months however this afternoon it became official. It’s somewhat surprising that it has taken this long for the company to get this up and running but I’d assume there were some significant technical limitations. It’s a relatively basic feature, however effectively parsing through millions of emails can prove complex.

While Facebook hasn’t rolled out commenting on other features, the company could use the lessons learned from rolling out comment replies and apply them elsewhere. For example users could quickly reply to messages sent via…

“Anonymous” Facebook Employee Interview: Fact vs Fiction

A supposed anonymous interview with a Facebook employee is generating some buzz around the web, after some apparently controversial information was spilled. While some blogs are saying that the interview provides new “revelations“, nothing in the article came as a surprise to us. Is this information true or false and how much of it really comes as a surprise? We’ll break down all the facts (as we understand them).

Before jumping into our interpretation of the article we should state that Facebook’s PR team is dismissing this interview as bunk. Larry Yu told CNet news, “This piece contains the kind…

The Rise Of Scam Facebook Groups

There is a rapidly growing trend on Facebook, in which scammers address the concerns of users on Facebook through groups that provide fake solutions in an attempt to build extremely large followings. Just last week I was sent the names of two or three groups which entice users to invite their friends in order to unlock extended Facebook features. The group “Change Your Facebook Profile Theme with colorbook™“, for example, tells users to invite all of their friends to a Facebook group in order to learn how to change your Facebook profile color.

The way that the colorbook group works…

Facebook Shuts Down Service That Automatically Deletes Facebook Accounts

If you’re looking to delete your Facebook account, you are better off using Facebook’s account deletion form than Seppukoo which has now been blocked from Facebook. That’s why the Seppukoo website now has a tutorial on how to manually delete your account posted on their homepage (which we’ve embedded below). Not only has Seppukoo been blocked but they were also sent a Cease and Desist from Facebook’s D.C.-based law firm: Perkins Coie.

At this point there’s little reason for Facebook to continue with litigation as the company has been effectively blocked from accessing Facebook. The site had enabled users to…

Facebook Makes Things Easier With A Redesigned Help Center

This evening Facebook announced a redesigned help center which aims to make it easier for Facebook users to find the answers to the problems they are having. Personally, I don’t use the help center too often, however I know that Facebook has been steadily improving the help area over the past couple years. Today, Facebook has announced a number of additional features.

Among the new improvements is a new search interface, expanded user-to-user help topics, navigational filters, and unique URLs for help topics. While the design is similar to the previous iteration of the help center, the upgrades will be…

Facebook Responsible For 20 Percent Of Divorces

One of the best uses of Facebook is to catch your cheating spouse! According to one law firm, over 20 percent of new divorce petitions contain references to Facebook. Mark Keenan, Managing Director of Divorce-Online said “The most common reason seemed to be people having inappropriate sexual chats with people they were not supposed to.” While I’m not sure how people get caught having inappropriate private chats with others, the technical details were not described by the law firm.

An increasingly common reason being cited is “Flirty emails and messages found on Facebook pages”. So if you are married, you…

New fb.59.to Facebook Virus Posts Random Images To Your Profile

It appears as though a prankster has come up with a clever little trick to get you to post a random image to your profile. It’s a simple loop which gets users to post a link an image, in turn getting your friends to click on the link and do the exact same thing. While the “virus” is not malicious and doesn’t require you to install any software on your computer, it does spam your friends which can be pretty annoying.

This latest “virus” appears to be more of a joke than anything else. It uses an iFrame to hide…

Facebook Upgrades JavaScript Connect Library And Announces FriendFeed Support Of OAuth WRAP

Facebook has been testing an alpha version of their latest Facebook Connect library over the past couple months. The new library is supposed to simplify for developers the process of implementing Facebook Connect. Today Facebook is announcing “basic support for XFBML and an advanced data layer for optimizing FQL queries.” While David Recordon of Facebook demoed this to developers at the Washington D.C. developer garage last week, the latest library should make things much easier.

Keep in mind that the latest Facebook Connect JavaScript library is still in alpha mode (not even beta) so running this on a production site…
