MTV Partners With YoVille For VMA Promotion

YoVille, the popular Facebook virtual world, has partnered with MTV to help promote this weekend’s Video Music Awards. The campaign involves a number of integration points including custom MTV gear and items, a party at the virtual lounge “Sky Nightclub”, and an MTV VMA Room Contest. The promotion is one of the most integrated campaigns that we’ve seen on a Facebook virtual world and it’s a trend that we’d expect to continue.

I personally found the MTV VMA Room Contest to be one of the most entertaining promotions. Users are encouraged to design their room as stylishly as possible and…

Toyaanisqatsi: time lapse control using LEGO parts

A simple panning motion can add impact to the already-dramatic effect of time lapse photography. To accomplish this, frugal cinematographers sometimes build [Rube Goldberg] contraptions from clock motors, VCR parts or telescope tracking mounts. Hack a Day reader [Stephan Martin] has assembled a clever bargain-basement system using an Arduino-driven stepper motor and a reduction gear system built up from LEGO Technic parts, along with some Processing code on a host PC to direct the show.
While the photography is a bit crude (using just a webcam), [Stephan’s] underlying motion control setup might interest budding filmmakers with [Ron Fricke] aspirations but Top Ramen budgets. What’s more, unlike…

Digital motorcycle monitor

[Bill] documented the creation of his motorcycle monitor over on the Arduino forum. Consisting of a speedometer, tachometer, and gear indicator, the monitor accurately displays the variables measured by each of the gauges. The gear indicator works by comparing the engine RPM to that of the rear wheel. This ratio is unique to each gear, allowing the Arduino to easily tell which gear the bike is in. The same system is used on many commercial gear indicators. The initial prototype was built using a protoshield, Bluetooth module, graphic LCD, and a few other components. In order to make logging simpler, the Bluetooth…

DIY 3D gets a nod at SIGGRAPH

Among the courses at this year’s SIGGRAPH (an annual technical conference and showcase of the latest in computer graphics research) was an introduction to 3D scanning that covers all the bases: mathematical foundations, two different build-your-own hardware approaches, and how to process and render the resulting datasets. The simplest of these methods requires nothing more than a webcam, halogen light source, and a stick! The presenters have assembled all the course materials on a top-notch web site featuring slide shows, complete source code, and an extensive round-up with links to both commercial and homebrew 3D scanning gear.
SIGGRAPH and 3D scanning have been highlighted…

E-bike across Canada for $10

[Justin Lemire-Elmore] spent one month riding his electric bike across Canada last summer. He made the journey from Vancouver to Halifax in 30 days using a mere $10 worth of electricity to recharge his bike. He put together a rather bizarre looking semi-recumbent bicycle to hold all of his gear. The motor controller, charge controller, battery packs, and lighting system were all his own design. He has a captivating 2 hour presentation embedded below in which he describes all the problems he had with his equipment during the trip as well as all the great experiences the journey offered.

Lego modded antenna tuner

This antenna tuner is controlled remotely using geared motors and legos. The tuner needed to be closer to the antenna for performance reasons. This created a problem; most of the radio gear is inside while the tuner is outside. The gear motors and Legos combine to form a closed loop servo, operating two air core caps and an inductor switch. A control box placed near the radio is hard wired to the modded tuner outside. We would like to see something like this under gesture control using the Wii MotionPlus + Arduino.
