Friend.ly Photo App Spreading Through Facebook Like A Virus

A new Facebook Connect application has spread quickly around the Facebook social graph by tagging all of a user’s friends who have the same zodiac sign. This is the latest in a series of new photo tagging applications which have been spreading like wildfire across the site. The Facebook platform lets users easily tag their friends but by prompting users for unrestricted posting and unrestricted photo upload permissions, the application is able to spread like crazy. It leads me to wonder whether Facebook will begin cracking down on these types of apps.

The way Facebook’s new permissions system is that…

Facebook Adding Stream Clicks To Page Insights

Want to track how many clicks you are getting on those news stories being posted to your Facebook Page? While Facebook hasn’t provided any tool to track clicks yet, there’s one in the works as buzzmarketing daily notes. For now, Facebook will only be providing page administrators with estimated click through rates. While not as useful as tracking every single stream post’s activity, many administrators will be happy to see the new feature.

Facebook describes the new service as follows:

Stream CTR / ETR: This graph is a measure of the Click Through Rate and Engagement Rate for your content…

How To Use Facebook Applications To Boost Your Fan Base

This is Day 13 of the 30 Days to 3,000 Fans program. You can learn more about the program here.
The Facebook platform presents an amazing opportunity for companies to expand their presence quickly by enabling viral distribution through the social graph. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that viral distribution does not necessarily mean more customers. Many businesses become easily distracted with mind-boggling numbers. “If I get millions of users to my application, I only need one percent to purchase my product!” Unfortunately things aren’t that simple, especially considering that most Facebook users are…

How To Create A Facebook Note That Spreads Like Wildfire

This is Day 9 of the 30 Days to 3,000 Fans program. You can learn more about the program here.
Remember the viral Facebook note about “25 things about me”? If you don’t then you probably haven’t been on Facebook for long. The 25 things about me note spread through Facebook and touched millions of users before it eventually died out. The main ideas behind the note was similar to a chain letter. You write 25 things people don’t know about you and then tag your friends and ask them to write the note as well. The end result was…

WTF-O-meter

Here’s something every office probably needs. Ours does at least. It’s a WTF counter. When the office gets just a little too weird, someone hits the button and it gets logged. It’s probably pretty easy to judge the day by the WTF chart. The button is connected to an Arduino that updates the status on a local web server. We can imagine a nice bar graph of WTFs per day, or possibly a pie chart with normal time vs WTF time. Unfortunately, imagining is all we’re going to do. They didn’t include any examples of the visualizations. Can you…

The Abstraction Of Facebook Pages As An Embeddable Product And The Community Platform API

Mark Zuckerberg has said on a number of instances that the future of Facebook does not exist on Facebook.com. The emphasis is on Facebook as an identity platform and Facebook Connect which will continue to expand over time. If the entire platform is going to take place elsewhere on the web then it would only make sense that we begin to see Facebook Pages do the exact same thing.

Facebook Pages has become an easy to configure instant community platform and while I currently recommend that individuals drive their users to their Facebook Page, it would make much more sense…

oDesk Adds Facebook Connect. Will it Be Useful?

oDesk, the web-based tool for workteams, now supports Facebook Connect. This goes for both oDesk registered buyers and service providers, extending oDesk user capabilities to find the right person for the job within their social graph.
The three main aspects of oDesk’s Facebook Connect integration include the ability to share information including job openings, oDesk profile updates, and test results. As your oDesk profile acts as your online resume, an update to your profile could mean you have added more job experience or have received certification that adds a few letters after your name.

These are important updates for an…

Nice LCD thermometer

This digital thermometer won’t win any awards for being something innovative and new, but we really like how it looks. The bar graph style display adds something to the project that a normal character display just wouldn’t. You can download source code and schematics on the site.
