Discovery Launches Facebook Connect Enabled Shark Week Promotion
Discovery is the latest company to launch a Facebook Connect enabled promotion that pulls in profile data into a custom generated video. This video is much more reminiscent of the Prototype game trailer that we previously wrote about. The promotion creatively depicts the viewers memories as they are being eaten by a shark. It also intelligently prompts a user to share the campaign after viewing the promotional video.
You can watch the video below to see how my version of the video turned out but I personally found it to be pretty slick. There’s also a job listing in the…
Greenhouse guard
[Seth King] sent in his latest hack where he used an Arduino to regulate various aspects of a greenhouse. He has sensors for soil and air temperature as well as light and moisture. He built a custom circuit that uses relays to power fans, lights, and heaters. Using timers and the sensor data, the devices can be triggered to create the perfect environment for sprouts. He hopes to make the whole thing wireless by integrating XBees, but for now he ran a USB cord to his computer.

Facebook Testing Out Feed Story Feedback Feature
Facebook is the process of testing out a new feedback feature with feed stories. The new feature, which is practically identical to comments, let’s you provide feedback to various users. Why would you want to differentiate between comments and feedback? You probably wouldn’t but as Eric Eldon pointed out back in April, Facebook is testing out credits integrated with feed items. One story after the other is pointing toward a soon to be released credits system within Facebook.
Just today Eric Eldon posted again about a slight change to Facebook’s credit system. Apparently Facebook is switching the cost of gifts…
Airline antics with Lara the robot
Lara, the robot pictured above, is the first humanoid robot to pass security and have her own seat on a plane. The reason she had to travel via airline was that FedEx had lost and damaged her on previous trips. On the way back from Robofest, which she placed 5th in, security didn’t really want to let her on the plane. They’re lucky they didn’t all get detained. Fortunately, Robofest made the news and one guard had seen it. They call Lara autonomous, but state that she can only move her limbs based on commands. Their reason for calling…
Facebook Users Appear To Be Over Swine Flu Hysteria
Last week Facebook released swine flu maps which tracked the domestic swine flu hysteria. While the geographic maps provided little insight, Facebook lexicon has been tracking the volume of discussion and it appears that swine flu hysteria is beginning to die down. Not surprisingly, CNN.com has stopped posting about the “deadly swine flu” as it was clearly affecting the country’s ability to function properly.
Many journalists claim that the coverage was not excessive. As Reuters points out:
One of the messages that has come up repeatedly is that the 1918 pandemic, cited as the worst-case scenario because it killed upwards…
WARNING: New Facebook Phishing Scam Spreading Rapidly
In the last half hour I’ve received multiple emails from people about a new phishing scam making its way around Facebook. The service lures users to enter their information at a site FBAction.net which displays a false Facebook login page. Within a short amount of time, users that enter their email and password find that their password has been switched and all of their friends have been emailed from the account.
It’s not a very original phishing scam but it definitely works. One user told us that his “guard was down today” and he ended up entering his information. The…
