The Story Behind Facebook’s “Secret” Audio Application

Last week I wrote that Facebook may be launching an audio product given the addition of audio within the page insights area. I reached out to Facebook for comment and found out that this wasn’t actually a soon to be released product, but instead an audio product that already exists. The “Music Player” application originally launched with pages and lets you upload songs for your fans to listen to.

While I wouldn’t exactly call this a robust application, it provides enough support for you to at least get songs posted on your page. This tool would be most useful for…

Facebook Launching New Audio Product?

There are four primary types of media: text, audio, video, and photos, however Facebook has yet to introduce a product which enables users to share audio content. One of our readers has noticed that the insights area includes an “Audio” section under media consumption. It has been there for a while and is even referenced in Facebook’s help section however it doesn’t make sense because there’s no product currently linked to this and no data is showing up.

Does this mean that Facebook will soon launch a stand alone audio product? I sure hope so! There are currently a number…

Brand Lift: Facebook’s Answer To The Brand Advertising Conundrum

There are two primary types of online advertising: direct sales marketing and branded ad campaigns. Direct sales models like online affiliate marketing or email marketing have already been proven. However large brands have only begun spending billions of dollars online, because there have been very few ways to monitor the effectiveness of campaigns. Let’s say that you set up a Facebook application which millions of users interacted with. How do you then measure the ROI of that program once it’s complete? Given that large companies spend hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars on advertising everywhere, it’s difficult to…

Friend.ly Photo App Spreading Through Facebook Like A Virus

A new Facebook Connect application has spread quickly around the Facebook social graph by tagging all of a user’s friends who have the same zodiac sign. This is the latest in a series of new photo tagging applications which have been spreading like wildfire across the site. The Facebook platform lets users easily tag their friends but by prompting users for unrestricted posting and unrestricted photo upload permissions, the application is able to spread like crazy. It leads me to wonder whether Facebook will begin cracking down on these types of apps.

The way Facebook’s new permissions system is that…

@You Can Now Tag Users, Pages, And Apps On Facebook

Last week we wrote about Facebook’s new tagging functionality but as of this afternoon the feature finally went live. While the functionality is no different than initially described, many users are finding that this transforms the overall user experience. There are also many objects on Facebook which still can’t be tagged with applications and pages such as photos. You also can’t include tags within Facebook messages but I’d expect more robust tagging functionality to be added over the coming weeks and months.

So does this new functionality eliminate the need for Twitter? No, but it most definitely helps users to…

Real Time searching

With the fresh competition of Bing, we are reminded that search engines haven’t changed much since Google came along. Bing has made some nice advancements, like video previews, but still has a way to go to be truly different than Google. [Long]put together this prototype of a real time search system based off of Bings API. He was inspired by Google Wave which we hope to see soon. Wave is primarily for communication, redefining how email and messaging would work. We can’t help but think that Google probably has some cool stuff in the secret vaults for searching too.…

Slide Announces $500,000+ Sponsorship From Hot Pockets

Today Slide is announcing the launch of season two of KatalystHQ within their FunSpace Facebook application and with it, a $500,000+ sponsorship by NESTLÉ® HOT POCKETS®. Recently the company claimed that they has laid off a large portion of their sales staff in order to focus “its attention on building a team that will focus on higher-end campaigns, ones in the $500,000 category range.” (Source: GigaOm) Many large developers that I spoke with laughed at the concept, asking “Are there really that many $500,000 plus sponsorships?” Apparently so.

This is the first big sponsorship deal that we’ve heard of from…

fbFund Startup Thread.com Gets $1.2 Million In Funding

Today at the fbFund REV demo day, Thread.com (formally “Frinto”) announced that they have received funding from a number of well known valley investors. Thread.com leverages Facebook Connect to create a site for social dating via friendly introductions. While Facebook has a number of large dating applications, none of them work quite as smoothly as this one.

Interestingly enough there are a number of dating applications that are attempting to do the same thing but none have relied solely on Facebook Connect. Honestly, I think it’s a great idea and given that users can instantly bring along their contacts when…

If you haven’t studied internet marketing then there’s a good chance you don’t know what a landing page is. If you already know what one is, congratulations, you are well ahead of most people. According to Wikipedia, a landing page, “is the page that appears when a potential customer clicks on an advertisement or a search-engine result link.” Honestly, the Wikipedia definition isn’t the best one since there are new types of advertisements. The main point is that a landing…

Facebook Now Providing Ad Click Estimates

Want to know how many people will click on the new Facebook ad that you are creating? Now you can. Over the past few weeks Facebook has been testing out advertisement click estimates for campaigns and it appears it is back. While it doesn’t work for all campaigns, it’s an extremely useful feature. However it appears that there are still a few bugs.

In the process of creating one of my own ad campaigns I found that reducing my ad’s click bid would result in an increased volume of clicks. Does that really make much sense? Not really unless Facebook…

Facebook Switching Ad Ratings From “Thumbs Up” To “Like”

Facebook will be pushing out a minor change tonight for ad feedback. Rather than clicking on the thumbs up and thumbs down icons, Facebook will be replacing the feedback systems to “like” or “X” according to a Facebook representative that we spoke with. Other subtle changes to the site tonight include the expansion of the site’s header to be the full width of the screen. While both are subtle changes, I’ve already received a number of emails from users who’ve seen the changes go into effect.

In regards to the new ad feedback settings, Facebook has told us, “Since ‘like’…
