SocialHour Relaunches As Dizzy Networks (Updated)

It appears that Social Hour, one of the few ad networks to be completely banned from the Facebook platform, has now relaunched under a new name: Dizzy Networks. According to one source, Social Hour had been looking for a new face for the company and according to the company’s website, they hired Jeremy Olsson, who was previously the Director of Performance Marketing for RockYou. While the company is still focused on trying to convert IQ quizzes, it doesn’t appear as though Dizzy Networks is running as aggressive of advertisements this time around.

It was only a matter of time before…

“Share Song” Let’s You Give Your Facebook Friends Something To Groove To

I’ve been searching for a Facebook application that lets you share the full version of songs within your feed. While applications like iLike provide licensed 30 second samples, none of the applications that I’ve found make it easy to share full songs directly to your feed. There previously was the Music application which let you post full songs but that was disabled in a short amount of time as it violated Facebook terms and a little thing called “the law”.

The Share Song application has been developed by Grooveshark and enables users to share any song that currently exists in…

Facebook Starts Disabling Status Updates For Generic Facebook Pages

This evening I’ve been receiving multiple reports from the owners of large “generic” pages that Facebook is systematically disabling the ability of administrators to post status updates. For example the owner of the Facebook Page, “Sex?” let us know that he is no longer able to post status updates from within his page. There are multiple other Page owners that are now contacting us as well. We’ve received information from a number of individuals which are essentially looking to build cross-promotion networks.

Unfortunately that strategy may be in violation of Facebook’s terms and based on Facebook’s activity this evening, it…

Areps.at, The New Facebook Phishing Scam (Updated)

Facebook phishing scams won’t seem to go away. Today a new scam appears to be spreading through people’s Facebook inboxes: areps.at. It’s another obscure URL and it’s just like all the other ones that have been spreading around the site. As soon as you login to the site, it will steal your email and password and then log you into Facebook. Within a short period of time the system will automatically switch your password and block you from the site.

It then goes on to send the same URL to all your friends. Whoever is behind the scam has been…

How The Hell Is MyCalendar So Successful?

MyCalendar, the application which apparently updates you about your friends’ birthdays has surprisingly jumped to second on the application leaderboard. The reason we previously haven’t posted about MyCalendar is that the company’s user base is split across two identical applications which each have around 15 million monthly active users now. What is so remarkable about the application? Not much to be honest.

The two applications have attracted millions of users by using an interesting trick to get users to invite their friends. When you go to “Add a Birthday” it is actually a form for inviting your friends to the…

Breaking: Facebook Asks Users If They’ll Pay For Vanity URLs

As Facebook searches for ways to increase their revenue, some users are being asked if they are willing to pay for vanity URLs. For those unaware of what vanity URLs are, they are the short strings that follow “facebook.com”. For example, the AllFacebook.com public profile has a short URL which is “http://www.facebook.com/allfacebook”. A number of celebrities and high profile individuals have been granted profile URLs for free as a way to encourage them to update their Facebook public profiles more regularly.

Other users have been regularly asking for shorter versions for their public profiles. It appears that Facebook has been…

The Rise of An Underground Facebook Profile Market

Over the past few days there has been increasing buzz about a market for Facebook public profiles. I’ve even received a few emails on the topic, one individual who was asking me about reasonable rates for purchasing public profiles. While I haven’t heard of any finalized transactions yet I’d expect this to become increasingly regular. Just last week Jason Kincaid posted about CNN acquiring the extremely popular CNNbrk Twitter account from another Twitter user who had been personally managing it.

On Facebook however, brands regularly contact Facebook to have fake versions of their public profiles shut down. At one point,…

Facebook Starts Recommending Branded Public Profiles

Last night Facebook turned on a feature which will surely build some buzz: the recommendation of brands as friends. Previously Twitter launched a user recommendation system which generated a lot of controversy as recommended users instantly got hundreds of thousands of followers. Many of the popular Twitter users have not yet embraced their Facebook public profiles in the same way that they’ve embraced their Twitter accounts.

Perhaps this new public profile recommendation system will help change that. So how are these new recommendations determined? While we don’t know yet, we have pinged Facebook to find out how they are generating…
