Google Groups Used By Trojan As Command Network

Hackers have programmed a Trojan that uses Google Groups newsgroups to distribute commands. Trojan distribution via newsgroups has existed for more than a decade, but using newsgroups as a command and control channel is a new innovation.
The Grups Trojan itself is quite simple and is only noteworthy for the command and control structure it deploys. The malware is programmed to log into a Chinese language newsgroup to receive commands, Symantec security researcher Gavin O’Gorman writes.
When successfully logged in, the Trojan requests a page from a private newsgroup, escape2sun. The page contains commands for the Trojan to carry out.…

Yen Hurts Japan’s Exporters

SINGAPORE — Asian stock markets were broadly lower on Monday with exporter shares dragged down in Tokyo by a stronger yen. Overall sentiment was cautious with base metals and crude oil prices dropping and investors buying the safe-haven U.S. dollar. “Market timing is essential for investors still concerned about a correction in growth trends, which would lead to an adjustment in pricing of risk,” said analysts at UBS. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 2.5%, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 down 1.2% and South Korea’s Kospi Composite was off 0.8%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was down 0.9% while China’s Shanghai Composite index…

Oil drops 1.2 pct towards $68 as dollar bounces

TOKYO (Reuters) – Oil fell more than a dollar toward $68 a barrel on Monday as a rebound in the beaten-down U.S. dollar and nagging concerns that prices may have run ahead of market fundamentals extended last week’s late sell-off. The U.S. currency rallied sharply against a basket of currencies as investors covered short positions following last week’s slide of 2 percent to its lowest in a year, fuelled by funds flowing into riskier assets such as stocks and commodities and a drop in U.S. Treasury yields. The dollar’s reversal on Monday sent U.S. crude for October delivery tumbling…

BSE Sensex falls 0.5 pct after 6-day rally

MUMBAI (Reuters) – The BSE Sensex (^BSESN : 16185.2 -79.1) dropped 0.5 percent Monday as investors locked in profits after a six-session rally, with weak Asian markets setting the direction. By 11:23 a.m. (0553 GMT), the 30-share BSE Index was down nearly 80 points at 16,185.94 points, with 20 components losing. The benchmark, which climbed 5.6 percent over the previous six sessions, had more than doubled last Tuesday from its March low. “There is very little room for buying at these levels,” said D.D. Sharma, vice-president, Anand Rathi Securities. “There might be pockets of demand at dips, but largely…

ANALYSIS – Easy money fuels all markets, but not forever

NEW YORK (Reuters) – General investment theory holds that investors should diversify, buying one asset class on expectations of profit as they avoid others on fears of a loss for any given set of economic circumstances. But with gold at 18-month highs, U.S. stocks rising off recessionary lows and a rally in U.S. bonds sending yields on some debt to the lowest since July, the investment climate is anything but typical. The worst global economic contraction in decades prompted low interest rates around the world and central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, to take the extraordinary precaution of…

Rupee falls as stocks unwind; dlr watched

MUMBAI (Reuters) – The rupee dropped on Monday in tandem with lower stock markets, which could slow down foreign inflows, and a stronger dollar overseas. At 10:57 a.m. (0527 GMT), the partially convertible rupee was at 48.68/69 per dollar, 0.4 percent weaker than its previous close of 48.48/49. It had risen 0.9 percent last week. “It is the same old story — stocks are down, so the rupee has also weakened,” said Ashtosh Raina, head of foreign exchange trading at HDFC Bank. He expected the day’s range at 48.50-48.80. Shares dropped 0.9 percent early as weak Asian markets encouraged…

Business Confidence Deteriorates Further

The RMB/BER Business Confidence Index continued to decline in the third quarter, falling by 3 points to 23. This is the index’s lowest level in 10 years – a reading of 15 was recorded in the second quarter of 1999, just before the start of the last cyclical economic upswing in September of that year. The third quarter decline in business confidence is the net outcome of divergent results for the individual sub-sectors comprising the overall index. Confidence continued to decline in the retail and wholesale trade sectors, whereas it increased in manufacturing and new vehicle trade. In the case…

U.S. Mortgage Requests Jump Down as Refinancing Loses Steam
By Julie Haviv. NEW YORK, July 29 (Reuters) – U.S. mortgage requests dropped for the first time in four weeks, caused by a decreasing in need for home refinancing loans because interest rates climbed, data from an industry group showed on Wednesday.
Requests for loan to purchase a home, a basic pointer of sales, were flat. Lack of interest for buy loans does not bode well for the hard-hit U.S. housing market, which otherwise has been showing signs of stabilization.
The U.S. Mortgage Bankers Association supposed it seasonally adjusted index of…
