Yen Hurts Japan’s Exporters

SINGAPORE — Asian stock markets were broadly lower on Monday with exporter shares dragged down in Tokyo by a stronger yen. Overall sentiment was cautious with base metals and crude oil prices dropping and investors buying the safe-haven U.S. dollar. “Market timing is essential for investors still concerned about a correction in growth trends, which would lead to an adjustment in pricing of risk,” said analysts at UBS. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 2.5%, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 down 1.2% and South Korea’s Kospi Composite was off 0.8%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was down 0.9% while China’s Shanghai Composite index…

LONDON (Reuters) – Most people around the world support significantly increasing government spending to counter the economic crisis, according to a 20-nation opinion poll released on Monday. Humanoid Robot + Homebrew Waldo = Big Smiles

Robot enthusiast [Vitalijus Rodnovas] built this rig to allow a humanoid robot to mimic his own body movements in real time. [Rodonovas] refers to his man-machine interface as a “master-slave suit,” but elsewhere this is often called a waldo after a prescient 1942 [Robert Heinlein] novella. This project page is slight on details and is mostly written in his native Lithuanian, but the pictures speak volumes, and with a little help from Google Translate we can learn the essential facts: The robot itself is a commercially-available kit, the Kondo KHR-1HV from Japan. The custom-built harness uses a collection of surplus Soviet-era military potentiometers (acquired on…
