Speed up your browsing of Windows 2000 & XP machines

Here’s a great tip to speed up your browsing of Windows XP machines. Its actually a fix to a bug installed as default in Windows 2000 that scans shared files for Scheduled Tasks. And it turns out that you can experience a delay as long as 30 seconds when you try to view shared files across a network because Windows 2000 is using the extra time to search the remote computer for any Scheduled Tasks. Note that though the fix is originally intended for only those affected, Windows 2000 users will experience that the actual browsing speed of both the…

Install Windows 7 on your netbook

No one will ever accuse us of being Windows fanboys; we’re certainly fans of netbooks though (or anything cheap enough that we don’t care if we accidentally burn a hole through it). We’ve heard from quite a few friends that Windows 7 is actually an excellent operating system to run on a netbook and is a dream compared to XP. Gizmodo has compiled a guide to getting the release candidate on your lightweight machine. It’s available now and will work for free for a year. The image is 2.36GB which you need to dd onto a USB device. They…

Twittjr

Got an IBM PCjr laying around? Why not turn it into a twitter browsing machine? [Alex Grant] did this for the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Creativity and Innovation festival. You can enter search terms into the Twittjr and it will display the top 3 results from twitter. Leave it alone for a minute and it will refresh on its own. To make this happen, the Twittjr is connecting to another computer that is utilizing the twitter API to make the searches. The results are then pushed back to the Twittjr for display. All of this is done via the…

Complaint! Starbucks failed me this morning!

It’s a beautiful day in Glendale, Ca. I’m here at the Ascolta Office in the Wells Fargo building on Brand Avenue. I’m looking forward to kicking off this class in the next few minutes but I have to say, I had THE WORST Americano from Starbucks this morning. And trust me, I have had many Americanos and this was horrible. I mean, I live in Seattle, home of Starbucks. This one was Bad.
I think it was because the machine was totally automated. The Barista just held a cup under the machine and it spit out the shots. Usually they…

Hackit: SheevaPlug

A few months ago, we introduced the SheevaPlug, a 1.2GHz ARM processor with 512Mb of RAM, 2 usb ports, an ethernet port, and an SD card slot. In that article, we asked: “What would you do with one?”. We received tons of responses, 118 comments and counting. Scientific American had a similar idea and asked some “hackers”(MIT students) what they would do with it (thanks, grisspy). We thought maybe we would weigh in with our opinions. Join us after the break and in the comments.

Printing circuits on the RepRap

[Rhys Jones] has been working with the RepRap team to develop a way to print circuit boards. The machine first prints the plastic substrate with channels for the metal to be deposited into. They adapted their pinch wheel feeder to work with solid core solder (flux creates a mess). The extruded solder’s specific heat isn’t hot enough to melt the plastic. They made a video (embedded below) of their test piece: an optical endstop. The team has also been experimenting with decoupling the feed mechanism from the extruder.

Shifting Strategy

The “Laptop Hunter” strategy is a definite departure from last fall’s divisive Seinfeld-Gates series of Microsoft ads. (Microsoft, for the record, says those segments were meant only to “reintroduce” the brand and get people talking.) It also takes a distinctly different focus from the “I’m a Mac” ads Apple has long used to beat down the Microsoft name. That distinction may serve Microsoft well, says Matt McCutchin, a former ad copywriter who’s worked on numerous Microsoft and PC-related campaigns in the past.”It was a great strategy a year ago to try to kick the door open and get the buzz going,…
