Are you human? Then type out this book

Google has acquired reCAPTCHA and plans to use the system for digitizing books. Wait… what? CAPTCHA is the method of requiring a user to type in a visually obscured word to prove they are human. How can this digitize books? The answer is a bit obscure and takes some time to discover, but you’ll have fun along the way.
The Google blog links to a Google TechTalk video on Human Computation as an example of how they plan to use their new acquisition. It’s embedded below but at 51 minutes we figure most won’t watch it all so we…

CBS to advertise using Video-in-Print technology

In what seems like another move to blur the line between digital and print media, CBS has announced that they will be introducing something called Video-in-Print technology in next month’s issue of Entertainment Weekly. Video-in-Print, or ViP, technology consists of a small LCD screen and circuit board that can be inserted into print media and play video and audio content. CBS is using the ViP technology to promote their fall prime-time television lineup. Video-in-Print technology is the brainchild of Americhip, a company that claims to specialize in multisensory marketing. The ViP player in next month’s issue of Entertainment Weekly…

“Accidental Billionaires”: A Politely Scandalous Novel

Over the past two days I read through Ben Mezrich’s new book the “Accidental Billionaires”, and while hardly anything new is revealed, it provides as much entertainment as one would expect from flipping through the pages of Maxim magazine. Actually that’s not so true as there is more male eroticism than scantily clad women but you can’t blame the author for at least trying. If you were looking for the type of excitement evoked by watching the movie “Hackers”, you will be sorely disappointed, especially since there isn’t a sweet soundtrack to accompany the book … you’ll have to wait…

Bolt-action coil gun

TechEBlog has posted a few pictures of a student constructed coil gun. It’s bolt-action and includes a six round magazine. The gun only has a single stage to accelerate the projectile. While not as impressive as the portable coil pistol, it’s still more fun than most shop projects we’ve seen. You can find a video of the device below.

What’s The Best Business Model For Facebook Applications?

The “How Well Do You Know Me?” application is now the largest Facebook application ever based on monthly active users but how much is that worth?
