Yes, you read that correctly: electronic mail carried by birds. [Ferdinand] tipped us off to this story, which involves combining new and old methods in transferring data. The Unlimited Group, a firm in a remote section of South Africa, transfers loads of encrypted documents to a second office 50 miles away. A pricey broadband connection would take between 6 hours and two days to transfer a standard load (4GB) of data between these locations. On the other hand, Winston (seen above) can complete an equivalent flight within 45 minutes. A memory card is strapped to his leg, and using his wit and instinct, Winston…

Despite Passing On iLike, Facebook Appears Still Interested In Music
Just last week we wrote about the MySpace acquisition of iLike and this week it appears that some form of agreement between Facebook and Spotify is in the works according to Techcrunch. The rumor is based on a status update by Mark Zuckerberg in which he simply stated “Spotify is so good.” While Mark may be a victim to the classic “shiny object syndrome” found in much of Silicon Valley, he probably wouldn’t have written the update had something not been in the works.
Whether or not discussions or near the final stages, Spotify is most definitely an interesting product…
Zynga Rocketship Soars Past 80 Million Monthly Active Users, Is 100 Million The Next Stop?
Under a month after writing about Zynga surpassing the 60 million user mark, the company has now grown beyond 80 million monthly active users. A large portion of Zynga’s success is a result of their FarmVille application which is about to become the largest application on the platform at some point next week. While some companies have developed highly successful applications (LivingSocial was the largest application on the platform ever), no companies on Facebook have as large of a portfolio as Zynga does.
They have almost doubled the size of their closest competitor (Playfish) and are simply dominating the platform.…
Facebook Announces FriendFeed Acquisition
Facebook has announced this afternoon the acquisition of FriendFeed. For those unaware of the FriendFeed service, it enables users to publish stories just as Facebook does with feeds imported from around the web and open APIs for all information passing through the system. One interesting note about FriendFeed is the team’s remarkable ability to scale their application effectively without error.
The team has also developed a fairly robust search tool. The 12 person team has been building some pretty impressive technologies and while growth has not been as large as Twitter, the company has done an amazing job at building…
Discovery Launches Facebook Connect Enabled Shark Week Promotion
Discovery is the latest company to launch a Facebook Connect enabled promotion that pulls in profile data into a custom generated video. This video is much more reminiscent of the Prototype game trailer that we previously wrote about. The promotion creatively depicts the viewers memories as they are being eaten by a shark. It also intelligently prompts a user to share the campaign after viewing the promotional video.
You can watch the video below to see how my version of the video turned out but I personally found it to be pretty slick. There’s also a job listing in the…
Facebook Friend Recommendations From The Grave
Every time you visit the Facebook homepage you receive recommendations about potential individuals that you should friend but what happens when the person being recommended is dead? That’s exactly what has been happening to one of my family members for the past week and when I asked her about it, the response was understandable, “It’s a little bit creepy!” She then asked me what to do to remove it.
The way that Facebook’s system works is that when they learn that somebody has passed away, they switch the profile to memorial status. Facebook needs to be notified about the person…

Motorcycle Protective clothing That works!
There is some great looking motorcycle clothing on the marketthese days, but believe me not all of the motorcycle clothingoffers as much protection as you think. In Europe, formotorcycle clothing to be lawfully sold as ’safety clothing, ithas to pass a series of European standards, which are prettylengthy but are available on my website. The standards cover theclothing’s performance in abrasion, tearing and impact tests, and when they have passed; they are sold with the CE mark. However, no such regulation is available in the USA, so whatshould you look for?Protection in the right places’Not many people realise that most motorcycle injuries…
Twitter Considers Facebook Direct Competition, Racing To 1 Billion Users
In Twitter’s internal strategy documents published by Techcrunch, it’s pretty clear that Twitter sees Facebook as competition. Not only is the company racing to 1 billion users but they are also trying to determine ways that Facebook could kill them. We’ve been discussing the Twitter/Facebook battle since the beginning of the year when we suggested Facebook could kill Twitter.
Facebook is also clearly looking into ways to get rid of the Twitter threat and right now they are also testing out their own internal program to distribute status updates to Twitter. In the flick of the switch, all public status…
“Accidental Billionaires”: A Politely Scandalous Novel
Over the past two days I read through Ben Mezrich’s new book the “Accidental Billionaires”, and while hardly anything new is revealed, it provides as much entertainment as one would expect from flipping through the pages of Maxim magazine. Actually that’s not so true as there is more male eroticism than scantily clad women but you can’t blame the author for at least trying. If you were looking for the type of excitement evoked by watching the movie “Hackers”, you will be sorely disappointed, especially since there isn’t a sweet soundtrack to accompany the book … you’ll have to wait…

Facebook Appoints David Ebersman As Chief Financial Officer
Today Facebook has announced the appointment of David Ebersman, the former executive vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) of Genentech as the chief financial officer of Facebook. Gideon Yu was the previous CFO and was let go under rumored tension between him and Mark Zuckerberg.
The company has been searching for a new CFO since the departure of Gideon Yu. While reportedly looking for an executive with “public company experience”, there was little known about the end of Yu’s job. The new CFO, David Ebersman will likely oversee Facebook’s public offering at some point in the next few years…
