The musician stormed the stage to tell the audience Beyonce should have won best female video prize. Madonna made a personal tribute to Michael Jackson at the ceremony, saying she felt she had “abandoned him” and “felt his pain”. The late star’s sister Janet recreated the dance moves from their duet Scream. ‘Magnificent creature’West jumped onto the stage after Swift scooped the award, and said: “Taylor, I’m really happy for you, and I’m gonna let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.” The audience jeered, and Beyonce, who won video of the year and…

Muggmaker Makes Animated Avatars on Facebook

Muggmaker is a new Facebook application that allows you to create animated avatars. The avatars can then be used as your profile photo on Facebook, or other social media sites. Unlike the trend for animating an existing photo of yourself, Muggmaker doesn’t convert existing photos but enables you to create an avatar entirely from scratch.

To get started, you’ll need Flash installed on your computer. From there, you can create a fully custom avatar, starting with a blank face. Add facial features such as eyes, nose, mouth, ears. Top things off with a funky hair style. Everything is customizable, from…

Facebook’s Position In The Real-Time Search Wars

Over the past day there has been significant discussion about what the future holds for real-time search, and no matter what conversation you look at, Facebook is always part of it. Just last month, Facebook started testing a new version of search and over the past few weeks, I’ve taken the time to play with the system and compare it to other “real-time search engines”, primarily Twitter search.

Twitter Has More Volume, More Noise
While Twitter appears to be leading the real-time search engine, real-time search is far from mature. We’ve only begun to define what real-time search means but…

Hundreds Die In Urumqi. Does The World Care?

According to the latest news reports from Urumqi, a far-flung city in western China, “calm” had returned to the streets as the death toll from Sunday’s protests hit 156, with 800 injured, and 1,434 protestors detained.  Officials say most of the dead were Han Chinese, while Uyghur groups report that 90% of those killed were Uyghurs.  Though reports about the ethnic background of those killed and accounts of the protest may vary, one thing is clear.  The Chinese government has cracked down, enforced curfews, and rounded up protestors in an effort to stop future unrest.  Meanwhile,  wall posts from Uyghurs,…

Facebook And CNN Partner For Michael Jackson Memorial

Following up on the most successful live streaming event for Facebook ever, the Presidential Inauguration, CNN and Facebook have partnered once again, this time it’s for Michael Jackson’s memorial. The two are not the exclusive providers of the streaming event but it will clearly be a big event especially for Facebook users as Michael Jackson is now the most popular person on the site.

While Michael Jackson’s Facebook page does not appear to be promoting the event (probably since it’s owned by Sony Records), over 50,000 people have already registered for the Facebook event so far. CNN has also begun…

Will Michael Jackson Become The Most Popular Person On Facebook?

Last week when Michael Jackson passed away I wrote about the tremendous growth in his Facebook Page as it transformed into a memorial site. Since then, the page has quadrupled in size and has increased in its rate of growth. As the chart below illustrates, his Page had around 2.9 million fans as of last night and by 11:15 AM EDT today he attracted 3,348,349 fans. Currently the largest Facebook Page is Barack Obama who has approximately 6.42 million fans but is only growing by a few thousand fans a day.

Since his death Michael Jackson’s music has been selling…

Facebook Launches Keyword Suggestions For Ads

Yesterday I was testing out a few features of the Facebook advertising system and noticed a new feature which suggests related keywords based on the ones you enter. Facebook hasn’t provided any details about how the keyword suggestions system works but it appears to work relatively well. I tested it out with the phrases “Marketing” as well as “Michael Jackson” and Facebook effectively returned associated phrases.

Just last week the company reported that their advertising base has tripled. In an interview with Bloomberg, Tim Kendall stated that “lots of local businesses [are] finding success” with Facebook advertising. While the company…

Michael Jackson’s Facebook Page experienced a surge in fans after news of his death spread around the web. Currently the page appears to be attracting around 20 fans a second with a good chance that the page will become one of the top Pages is a short amount of time. The page wall has turned into a virtual memorial for the pop legend who’s life impacted much of the world and who’s music transformed an industry. While he may be a controversial figure, one thing is certain: until today he was the world’s largest pop icon. Not surprising considering that…
