This Week In Facebook: September 20, 2009

This week was yet another big week for Facebook with the company reaching new milestones, employees leaving, and the official launch of status tagging. I’m also proud to introduce a new feature of our weekly roundup: a stop motion video produced by my sister, Megan O’Neill. This new addition is a complete experiment so let us know your thoughts on the new weekly video!

Facebook Reaches 300 Million Users
This week Facebook announced that they officially crossed the 300 million user threshold, increasing the rate of growth to record levels. In addition to crossing this significant milestone, the company announced…

Facebook Announces 300 Million Milestone And Cash Flow Positive

Facebook has announced today that the company has reached 300 million users and that they are cash flow positive. This is huge news for the company who was previously on track to surpass 300 million by the end of the year. Just a month and a half ago the company surpassed 250 million users which means that they are still gaining over 5 million new users a week. Also included in the announcement was that Facebook is now officially cash flow positive, something previously expected to take place in 2010.

That Facebook is able to continue this growth and build…

Zynga Blows Past 100 Million Users Thanks To FarmVille’s Dominance

Today Zynga, the leading gaming company on Facebook, blew past the 100 million monthly active users level through their network of games. Much of the support has come from FarmVille which is not only the company’s largest game, but also the largest application on Facebook by an extremely large margin. FarmVille should also become the largest application ever on the Facebook application within the next day or two, surpassing the “How Well Do You Know Me?” application’s previous record of 35,554,755 monthly active users.

Based on daily active users, the application is already the largest ever by a large number.…

Zynga Rocketship Soars Past 80 Million Monthly Active Users, Is 100 Million The Next Stop?

Under a month after writing about Zynga surpassing the 60 million user mark, the company has now grown beyond 80 million monthly active users. A large portion of Zynga’s success is a result of their FarmVille application which is about to become the largest application on the platform at some point next week. While some companies have developed highly successful applications (LivingSocial was the largest application on the platform ever), no companies on Facebook have as large of a portfolio as Zynga does.

They have almost doubled the size of their closest competitor (Playfish) and are simply dominating the platform.…

Zynga Gains 12 Million Users In Two Weeks

Two weeks ago I wrote about Zynga surpassing 60 million monthly active users on Facebook. As of today the company now has over 72 million monthly active users and has the top application on the platform based on daily active users. FarmVille, an application which duplicates many of the features of the second most popular application, Farm Town, has now surpassed 5.3 million daily active users. Growth doesn’t appear to be slowing which isn’t surprising since the company has invested over $1 million in promotion alone.

With almost 50 percent growth in under a month, one has to wonder if…

Protect yourself from phishing attacks with OpenDNS

Phishing is an illegal activity where sensitive information, such as usernames and passwords, are acquired. Facebook and other social networking sites are frequently targeted. Phishing attacks can steal private information, such as login credentials or credit card numbers.
The latest generation web browsers, such as Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2.0 come with built in phishing protection but this is not enough. Various solutions were offered, including running anti-spyware software, disabling plugins, and so forth but  It would not prevent all. If the problem was caused by ISP’s DNS server,  you can use OpenDNS to help prevent things like this.…

Zynga Expands The Gap, Surpassing 60 Million Monthly Active Users

Zynga has been expanding the gap between them and competing developers now with over 60 million monthly active users when adding up the users across all their games. Playfish, the second largest application developer, has 35 million monthly active users, an impressive number however it’s still far from 60 million. So how does Zynga have such a dominant position on the platform?

The primary reason Zynga has such a dominant position is that they have 34 games, the top three of which add up to almost 40 million monthly active users alone. Not surprisingly, the company’s fastest growing game is…

Facebook Announces The 250 Million User Milestone

Today Facebook officially announced that they have surpassed 250 million users. We had projected that this milestone was crossed a couple weeks back but as of today it has become official with a blog post from Mark Zuckerberg. The company continues to grow at an amazing pace and now dominates just about every other social network on pretty much any metric.

With the company surpassing 225 million users just a few months ago, the company is well on track to surpass 300 million before the year is over. With a new round of funding and some employees who have decided…

DST Launches $100 Million Facebook Stock Purchase Program

The New York Times has released initial details about the Facebook employee stock purchase plan from Digital Sky Technologies (DST). As I wrote back in May, DST invested $200 million and announced plans to purchase up to $100 million “from existing common stockholders that would facilitate liquidity for current and former employees’ vested shares in the company”.

The transaction was projected to take place during the summer and as of today it’s official. According to the New York Times:

Digital Sky Technologies, the Russian investment firm that in May invested $200 million in Facebook, has begun a tender offer to…

Facebook Grows To 122 Million Monthly US Visitors While Twitter Continues To Growth As Well

According to analytics company Compete.com, Facebook has posted another month of growth, reaching over 122 million monthly U.S. visitors. Also interesting is that MySpace appears to have attracted more users to their site than at any point in the past 11 months. Twitter also appears to have continued its growth trend, growing to 22 million visitors in the past month just within the United States. Despite the microblogging platform’s continued domestic growth, Facebook growth has not begun to slow, making it the third most popular site in the United States according to Compete.

The data from Compete also suggests that…

Facebook Makes Half A Billion While Twitter Searches For A Few Million

Today there has been a fair amount of buzz today about Marc Andreesen’s comment, stated during an interview about his new venture fund, that Facebook should surpass $500 million in revenue this year. It’s not quite a surprise but what’s more interesting is that the company is on the fast track to billions while Twitter, the thorn in Facebook’s side, has yet to bring in any substantial revenue although a few initial advertisers have been buzzed about.

As I previously wrote, Twitter needs to implement Facebook Connect, not only to continue increasing their user base but also the potential for…

Face.com Scans 13 Million Facebook Photos Every Day

There’s well over 10 billion photos on Facebook, making it the largest photo-sharing site on the web. Now that’s a lot of people tagging each other. Face.com’s Facebook app, called Photo Finder, has taken on the task of tagging every last one of these photos, and a month after launching its beta version, Photo Finder has scanned over 400 million photos, getting through 13 million photos in a single day.

The purpose of all this scanning? To tag your beautiful mug. We covered Photo Finder’s launch on the Facebook application platform a few weeks back, and I noted how well…
