The Zynga Influence

To describe Zynga as a powerful influence on the Facebook developer platform would be an understatement. The company has achieved levels never thought possible. Farmville, the company’s leading application has reached levels that no other developer has ever come close to. In other words, the company is in a league of its own. With over 126 million monthly active users, the company accounts for the sum total of the next three largest developers: Playfish, RockYou, and Causes. So how did the company get to be so large?

‘Next generation’ wi-fi approved

The 802.11n technology, as it is known, was ratified by the IEEE, a body that oversees all wi-fi standards. It was conceived seven years ago and offers speeds at least six times faster than current approved technology. Electronics firms have sold PCs and routers using the standard for many years, labelled “802.11n draft”. But without the IEEE’s approval, there were no guarantees that future networking equipment would be compatible with the devices. The IEEE’s rubber stamp has changed that. All existing draft 802.11n wi-fi products will work with the final standard, according to the Wi-Fi Alliance, a group that tests…

Why You Should Attend This Year’s Engage Expo!

As most readers know, I typically refrain from promoting conferences on this site (aside from my own Social Ad Summit confernece) but later this month I’ll be heading out to California to attend the Engage! Expo. The event has a large number of social web industry executives speaking and attending which is why I’ve decided to go to this one. September through November is a busy season for conferences, however I try to limit the number I attend as you can spend all year going to events and never get any work done!

With the sheer number of people attending…

Happy birthday internet: 5 history videos

National Geographic has pegged September 2, 2009 as the 40th anniversary of the Internet. They do not cite their source and our source doesn’t make the same claim. But, August 30, 1969 is the date the first Interface Message Processor was delivered to the Arpanet. The IMP is what allowed different computer networks to talk to each other and so it follows that September 2 is probably an acceptable date to celebrate.
To commemorate this glorious day we’re sharing some of our favorite History of the Internet videos. Start with the National Geographic video and then take in the…

Twitter Striving To Innovate Quicker Than Facebook

This afternoon Twitter announced that geolocation data would now be added to users’ tweets. It’s something that Facebook has actually been discussing for some time off and on but adding such a feature to all feed stories isn’t the easiest process. In the meantime Facebook is still trying to adjust their platform to provide greater access to information. It’s essentially the “out opening” of Twitter, a similar strategy that Google attempted, starting with OpenSocial.

Interestingly enough, the model appears to be working for Facebook. The latest data from comScore suggests that Twitter’s growth took a break for July and the…

Protect yourself from phishing attacks with OpenDNS

Phishing is an illegal activity where sensitive information, such as usernames and passwords, are acquired. Facebook and other social networking sites are frequently targeted. Phishing attacks can steal private information, such as login credentials or credit card numbers.
The latest generation web browsers, such as Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2.0 come with built in phishing protection but this is not enough. Various solutions were offered, including running anti-spyware software, disabling plugins, and so forth but  It would not prevent all. If the problem was caused by ISP’s DNS server,  you can use OpenDNS to help prevent things like this.…
