Friend.ly Photo App Spreading Through Facebook Like A Virus

A new Facebook Connect application has spread quickly around the Facebook social graph by tagging all of a user’s friends who have the same zodiac sign. This is the latest in a series of new photo tagging applications which have been spreading like wildfire across the site. The Facebook platform lets users easily tag their friends but by prompting users for unrestricted posting and unrestricted photo upload permissions, the application is able to spread like crazy. It leads me to wonder whether Facebook will begin cracking down on these types of apps.

The way Facebook’s new permissions system is that…

Anil Firm Questions RIL Gas Margin

Reliance Natural Resources Ltd has alleged that Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd was charging an illegal and unauthorised marketing margin of 13.5 cents, or Rs 6.6, per million British thermal units on gas from its fields in the Krishna-Godavari basin. RNRL, promoted by Mukesh’s younger brother Anil, said the ministry of petroleum and natural gas was adopting a “biased and partisan’’ approach by denying permission to GAIL (India) Limited to charge such a margin. “It is therefore all the more surprising that the petroleum ministry is taking no steps to immediately prevent RIL from charging this illegal levy. This once…

REC negotiating $200 mln Aflac loan-exec

MUMBAI (Reuters) – Indian state-run lender Rural Electrification Corp (REC) is negotiating with U.S. insurer Aflac Inc for a $200 million loan, a senior company official said on Monday. The loan is part of a $500 million overseas borrowing plan of the company, H.D. Khunteta, REC’s Finance Director told Reuters over telephone. “We are likely to get an offer from Aflac. They are more or less agreeable,” he said. Khunteta said company officials plan to visit the United States to discuss the loan with Aflac, the world’s largest seller of supplemental disability insurance, and would also meet other U.S.…

@You Can Now Tag Users, Pages, And Apps On Facebook

Last week we wrote about Facebook’s new tagging functionality but as of this afternoon the feature finally went live. While the functionality is no different than initially described, many users are finding that this transforms the overall user experience. There are also many objects on Facebook which still can’t be tagged with applications and pages such as photos. You also can’t include tags within Facebook messages but I’d expect more robust tagging functionality to be added over the coming weeks and months.

So does this new functionality eliminate the need for Twitter? No, but it most definitely helps users to…

What Developers And Marketers Need To Know About Facebook’s New Inbox And Notification APIs

This afternoon Facebook is announcing an extended set of features for developers including a new Inbox API and Notification API. The first announcement is a big one: “The Inbox API allows you to access your users’ messages, once they grant your application the new read_mailbox extended permission.” That means we could soon see a ton of new applications built around managing users’ Facebook inboxes. The one downside of this new feature is that applications cannot currently send messages.

What’s Being Added?
As part of the new inbox, attachments can be created using the same model used for developing publisher attachments…

Facebook Opens Stream Further, Pages Become True Twitter Competitor

Facebook made a significant announcement this afternoon regarding updates to their stream API. The two most significant updates is that publishing information to the stream will now be much simpler for third-party websites and developers can now access Page streams without an active session. Over the past couple months I’ve been writing about the expansion of Facebook Pages to become true community platforms and these updates further support this shift.

The most significant update that developers will find to be extremely valuable is that accessing stream.get for Facebook Pages no longer requires an active session. That means desktop applications like…

Facebook Posts Update About Advertising Policy (Updated)

This afternoon Facebook posted an update to their blog regarding the viral note circulating around the web about third-party ad networks. According to their post, the company is concerned about the user experience and so far they have shut down two ad networks (as we have previously written) and have forced some ad networks to remove the deceptive ads previously in question. The most important component of their blog post is as follows:

The advertisements that started these rumors were not from Facebook but placed within applications by third parties. Those ads violated our policies by misusing profile photos, and…

Viral Facebook Message Brings Issue Of Ad Endorsements Into Spotlight

This morning I’ve received numerous messages from people about the viral message going around the site about how to opt-out of Facebook advertisements. Following a misinformed article by Download Squad from last week, users are now going crazy about their images using in Facebook advertisements. While your image may be used, most users aren’t educated about how they are being displayed.

For many months now, Facebook has been using our friends’ images in advertisements about groups, Facebook Pages, and applications. When it was initially launched, the blogosphere was debating whether or not Facebook’s decision to make consent a default setting…

Link Up Facebook With Google, Yahoo or MySpace Account For Auto-Login

Having many login IDs and passwords is encouraged in terms of security but it might not be a good approach for absent minded people. Nowadays, users have accounts in Youtube, Facebook, Yahoo, Google, etc. and this can translate into a huge hassle if users were to check each account every day. Having to log in to the account with the right user name, and remembering the corresponding password can lead to mishaps especially if users are not using their own laptops or desktops with pre-saved names and passwords. For easy and quick login, the social networking website, Facebook, now…
