Seesmic Adds Facebook Comments, Now I’m Looking For A Raft (Or A Boat)

A few minutes ago Seesmic rolled out the latest version of their desktop application which now includes Facebook comments, spell check, and Twitter spam reporting. I’ve downloaded it and tested it out and while it’s a bit more useful, it is definitely not perfect. In order to comment on stories you need to click on an arrow icon and view a status update in another tab, at which point you can follow the thread of comments.

Then again viewing 151 comments, as Maria Sharapova has on her latest status update to her public profile, from directly in your feed wouldn’t…

New Facebook Application Pages Go Live

Last week Facebook announced that applications would soon have their application pages upgraded to function like the new public profiles. This morning that functionality went live. For many applications this means another distribution channel for reaching users and encouraging them to return to the application. Some developers had already been promoting existing public profiles for their applications which resulted in millions of fans.

Now they’ll need to figure out a way to merge the two pages. Last week I wrote that this was a major upgrade for applications as empowers developers to keep a conversation with their users. While some…

Facebook Introduces Post Quality Score For Pages

Last week Facebook introduced a new public profile insights tool which lets page administrators track who is interacting with their page and how each fan is interacting. One of the new measurements that was added is called “Post Quality” which according to Facebook is a “Score measuring how engaging your content is to Facebook users. A higher Post Quality indicates material that better engages users.”

Facebook has also indicated that they will be providing an additional metric called “Stream CTR / ETR” which is a measure of the click through and engagement rate for the page. One thing that still…

Facebook Turns on Commenting For Public Profile Wall Posts

Facebook’s new public profiles have had support for commenting on status updates since the new design was pushed out but one flaw was the inability to comment on fans’ wall posts. Thankfully Facebook has turned that feature on tonight. Up until this evening, public profile admins could not comment on users’ wall posts. It was actually a pretty substantial limitation.

I personally had a number of users that regularly post wall comments and I’m not able to reply to them. As of tonight that has all changed. I can thankfully comment and “like” any of the new wall posts. It’s…

Facebook’s Poor Decision To Postpone Revenue

How on earth is Facebook going to make billions of dollars? That’s the question that many Facebook skeptics have and it’s one of the reasons behind Facebook’s current valuation of $3 billion. The company has been focused on breaking even since early on and now years later they are still operating near a break-even point even though many are questioning the impact of the company’s growing server costs.

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer, recently told Bloomberg in response to a question about fundraising, “We could not be doing better financially. We absolutely do not need to take money. We…

Facebook Begins Heavily Promoting Mobile Services

Over the past day or so Facebook has begun heavily promoting their mobile services through ads on the site which all link to a new Facebook mobile landing page. They are trying to alert users to the robust set of mobile features that they currently have available including the ability to send messages directly to users, something Twitter has offered since early on. Whether or not users are actually substituting one service for the other (Twitter for Facebook), Facebook is clearly stepping up their communications campaign against the rapidly growing startup.

In addition to stepping up their communications campaign, Facebook…

The Facebook Police Shut Down One Of The Most Popular Public Profiles

This morning I got an email from the owner of the “Cristiano Ronaldo” public profile stating that he had been disable after attracting over 2.85 million fans. The reason? Most likely because the public profile wasn’t an official public profile and despite the owner having semi-approval from the soccer player’s agency, Facebook proceeded to shut it down. It’s not the first time we’ve seen large “unofficial” public profiles shut down.

Months ago Facebook disabled the “Homer J Simpson” public profile which had become one of the top 5 most popular profiles at the time. Facebook never told us why the…

Facebook’s Chris Kelly Considers Run To Become California’s Attorney General

Chris Kelly, Facebook’s Chief Privacy Officer, formally announced today that he has formed a committee to explore running for California Attorney General in 2010. No, Chris isn’t formally announcing himself as a candidate but this is essentially a step in that direction. Chris has also recorded a video which announces the creation of an exploratory committee (which we’ve also embedded below).

Chris has also set up a website (kelly2010.com), Facebook public profile, and an application to announce the formation of the committee. It seems like a fairly formal announcement for not being a candidacy announcement but Facebook already appears to…

Status Plug Launches Ad Network For Facebook Public Profiles

It was only a matter of time before ad networks began popping up for Facebook public profiles. Earlier today a commenter notified us of a new ad network: Status Plug. The service lets advertisers promote their product or service through targeted public profiles. Best of all, the published content can be video, audio, images, and links. If Facebook completely opens up their public profiles API, this ad network could theoretically become a direct competitor to Facebook’s internal ad network.

Last week we posted about how US Weekly had become the first public profile to obtain a sponsor. This space could…

Facebook Duplicates Twitter, Launches Status Text Updates

Earlier today Facebook turned on a feature to let users receive text updates from public profiles, the same way that Twitter users can receive mobile updates from specified profiles. It’s a small change but for brands it adds a lot of potential. Mobile broadcasting is a huge feature for companies that are looking to reach out to fans directly.

While Facebook hasn’t added a subscription count to a public profile’s insights yet, I would imagine that to be a new measurement within public profile insights in the near future. At this point, there’s little else functionality provided by Twitter that…

Are Public Profiles The Next Big Advertising Channel On Facebook?

While Facebook applications are known for flashy ads that will use dirty tricks to get users to click on them, Facebook public profiles have been able to avoid having advertisements placed on them. According to AdAge article yesterday, public profiles are no longer virgin territory for sponsors. Us Weekly has successfully sold sponsorship to State Farm on their public profile.
So is the beginning of a greater trend? Probably, but as one anonymous reader pointed out to us, selling advertising on public profiles is technically a violation of Facebook’s terms of service. Specifically, “Application tabs cannot contain advertising of any…
