Flaming Lips dial down the whimsy on “Embryonic”

NEW YORK (Billboard) – In the wee hours of the morning on Monday, September 14, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne was signing autographs after his band performed at upstate New York’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival when a burly young fan approached him with a length of industrial strap. Coyne recognized it as one of his own, used for tying down equipment like the large cannons that shoot confetti into the crowd throughout the band’s stage show. The fan told Coyne the strap had been shot out of the cannon and hit him in the chest, but he calmly handed it…

Philips Brings Home Cinema 21:9 Experience

The experience of cinema is just going to get bigger with the launch of Philips Cinema 21:9. Movies are displayed in the 21:9 aspect ratio — exactly as the director intended — on its 56-inch Full-HD screen. Cinema 21:9 is the world’s first TV to deliver a true cinematic viewing experience in the comfort of the home, informs Mahesh krishnan, vice president, consumer lifestyle, Philips, to Tech Gadgets. Traditional LCD televisions compromise on the cinematic viewing experience either by changing the aspect ratio to fill the screen – losing the full scope of the original shot – or by inserting…

Pool-playing robot + ARpool

Enjoy losing at pool? Well the folks at Queen’s University just made it a whole lot easier. The Deep Green robot was created with the purpose of playing a flawless game, allowing it to beat even the most skilled human players. More than a couple of research papers have been written on the project. A ceiling-mounted Canon 350D tracks the position of all of the balls, in addition to another cue-mounted cam (for higher shot accuracy). Using a bunch of calculations, and a computer (probably more advanced than an Arduino), the Deep Green is able to strategize and play. Very…

Facebook Launching New Prototypes Area In The App Directory

Facebook posted an image earlier today and quickly removed a shot of three upcoming prototype applications via a soon to be added, Facebook Prototypes category in the application directory. The three applications include “Desktop Notifications” which many other blogs have extensively covered, and two applications never covered previously: similar posts and enhanced event emails.

The first application: “similar posts” will most likely let you track which feed stories are similar to one that you are currently viewing. The second applications “Enhanced Event Emails” includes “an iCal file as an attachment to your Event Invitation emails”, letting people put the event…

Facebook Lite Leaked: A Simpler Version of Facebook

Last night we received a number of emails about a new version of Facebook that a number of users were “accidentally” invited to. Dubbed “Facebook Lite”, the service is a faster loading version of Facebook, meant to make it easier to digest your feed and consume basic Facebook applications. While there is no word on whether or not Facebook will enable platform applications, it’s clear that Facebook wants to make the site easier to use for those that don’t have fast connections.

Testing of the service is currently taking place in India and other areas of the world which don’t…

Making a tilt-shift lens

[Bhautik] is on version 2 of his tilt-shift lens, and wrote in to share what he has learned. Some aspects of the design on version 1 made it a bit quirky to use. You had to hold the lens in place, manually adjusting the focus. This meant that no two shots were the same. Since [Bhautik] wanted to do time lapse with it, he needed to re design it. He kept it simple and cheap, around $22 total.  Version two takes a lot longer to setup for the shot, but the result is reproducible. This means he can make…

Brain Buddies Remixes Popular Brain Teaser Application, Experiences Rapid Growth

They say imitation is the biggest form of flattery, so Playfish should be pretty flattered by German-based Wooga’s latest game: Brain Buddies. The application takes a similar approach to “Who Has the Biggest Brain?” but provides new forms of brain teasers. There are four alternative challenges, one of which is almost identical to one of the challenges in Playfish’s competing application. Right now the most popular strategy for success in the social gaming arena appears to be copy others and then promote.

The result has been multiple legal battles although none of them have resulted in any game changing decision…

Visualization – See Your Goals Before You Reach Them by: Emile Jarreau

There is no question that goal setting is an incredibly important step when it comes to actually achieving the goals you set for yourself in life.
