New Facebook Application Creating Massive Volumes Of Photo Spam

The photo tagging phenomenon has officially jumped the shark on Facebook with the All my Friends! application which lets you instantly tag your friends in pre-made images. It’s not exactly a new concept but for some reason this iteration of the application has been extremely successful having attracted over 5 million users so far and growing daily.

The application could actually be a useful service but the way that ads are currently posted within the application makes us think that this app was simply developed to attract millions of users and generate a quick buck. I’ve written about these multi-user…

Arduino + hang man = Hangmanduino

We saw this nifty little toy today and thought you guys might get a kick out of it.  Its called the Hangmanduino, and as you can probably tell from the name, it plays hang man. This was an exercise in simplicity, you’ll notice there is only a single control for the entire game. We thought that the design was pretty cool, especially the single control. We weren’t surprised to see that this is actually the very same control we featured previously. You can download the code yourself from his website, if you want to make one of your own.…

Tiny GSM alarm system

We’ve covered this sort of thing before, but there is something to be said for the simplicity of this tiny GSM alarm system by [trax]. The alarm system is designed to send the owner a text message when a sensor is triggered. This alarm only works with Siemens phones, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find one.  The alarm is configured via a dip switch on the board and can also be armed and disarmed by text. The brains of this system is a PIC16F84A. The code and schematics are included at the bottom of the page.
[Thanks…

Will Facebook Events Soon Compete With Eventbrite?

Facebook has publicly stated their intent to launch a payments platform and have even begun testing it with multiple application developers but one area where they’ve yet to integrate is their own products. While the company has tested a system which enables users to send credits, nothing has been released since those initial tests. One area where we see a ton of potential is Facebook events, which has become one of Facebook’s most popular applications.

Facebook even reported that Facebook events is larger than evite, which was once the most dominant site for social event planning. Eventbrite has become a…

Homemade regenerative tube radio

There are no microcontrollers in this project. In fact you wont find a single transistor. This classic regenerative tube radio, modeled after an early 20th century homebrew is complete with schematic and additional photos. For those who are not familiar with tube designs and for simplicity, the regeneration circuit can be thought of as feedback though this relation may be argued. Read the rest after the break which includes a crash course in tube operation.
A basic vacuum tube generally consists of a heater, grid, and plate. A current is passed through the heater which as the name suggest,…

Google preparing to launch a PC operating system

In a direct challenge to Microsoft, Google announced late Tuesday that it is developing an operating system for PCs that is tied to its Chrome Web browser.
The software, called the Google Chrome Operating System, is initially intended for use in the tiny, low-cost portable computers known as netbooks, which have been selling quickly even as demand for other PCs has plummeted. Google said it believed the software would also be able to power full-fledged PCs.
The move is likely to sharpen the already intense competition between Google and Microsoft, whose Windows operating system controls the basic functions of…

Live From The Facebook Privacy Call

This afternoon Facebook is hosting a privacy call to update a few press members about the company’s latest changes. With a lot of confusion about what exactly is taking place, the company wants to make some clarifications as the changes will have a significant impact on the user experience. We’ll begin updating this post as the call begins.

[1:01 PM EDT] – Waiting for the call to begin.
[1:08 PM EDT] – Still waiting (and btw, I’m blogging on a bus, not to be confused with a boat)
[1:10 PM EDT] – Facebook logo just came up in the presentation.…

Words Of Wisdom For Twitter: Integrate Facebook Connect

John Battelle is one smart cookie. In a post this morning, John suggests that Twitter leverage Facebook Connect in order to prevent people from never coming back. By integrating with Facebook Connect, the company will be able to help people instantly connect and draw meaning from the site. Twitter could even take things a step further and let people import their Facebook status directly to Twitter to essentially create the ultimate status search engine.

Currently the only recommendations that Twitter provides is for celebrities and as one of my friends suggested to me during lunch the other day, the conversation…

Qik Publishes Your Streamed Videos To Facebook’s News Feed

This evening Qik is officially announcing support for Facebook Connect which means videos that you streamed live via Qik can now be uploaded directly to Facebook. Recently I had posted a comment on the AllFacebook.com public profile suggesting that whoever develops a live streaming video solution for the news feed will get a ton of users. This is the closest thing to my live streaming concept.

Users simply login using Facebook Connect via Qik and upload their videos directly. Those videos are then archived using Facebook’s existing video platform. It’s a pretty basic integration but it doesn’t really matter how…
