Facebook Becomes Television Thanks To UStream

What really makes television what it is? Is it the fact that it’s sitting in some dedicated space in your living room? Or is it the fact that it’s probably one of the larger monitors in your apartment or house? Maybe it’s not connected to a computer, and that’s what makes it a television (although they’ll all soon be computers). Whatever it is, Facebook is going head on with television not only through their new Brand Lift service but also through their numerous Ustream partnerships lately.

I’ve written numerous times about how social networks have rapidly become the new television…

The Story Behind Facebook’s “Secret” Audio Application

Last week I wrote that Facebook may be launching an audio product given the addition of audio within the page insights area. I reached out to Facebook for comment and found out that this wasn’t actually a soon to be released product, but instead an audio product that already exists. The “Music Player” application originally launched with pages and lets you upload songs for your fans to listen to.

While I wouldn’t exactly call this a robust application, it provides enough support for you to at least get songs posted on your page. This tool would be most useful for…

It’s time again for our weekly recap of the latest Facebook news stories! While Facebook didn’t acquire any companies, or surpass any significant milestones this week, there was still plenty of news for the fast growing social platform. We also have the second volume of the This Week In Facebook video series being produced by my sister. The video is jam packed with YoVillians, burglars, and a game of Risk so check it out!

Protests In YoVille

Facebook Announcing New Advertising Product Tomorrow? (Updated)

Tomorrow afternoon Facebook will make a special announcement at Ad Week NYC and they’ve been promoting the announcement heavily via the Facebook Marketing solutions page. Apparently the live stream will be posted on the page and while no details have been provided regarding the announcement, it sounds as though a new advertising product will be launched or upgrades to the existing ones will be rolled out.

Last week I posted screenshots of the new Facebook ad manager which was being tested out with some advertisers so perhaps the company will be announcing the new service for everybody. Or perhaps we’ll…

You Can Now Access All Your Facebook Content From Tweetdeck

Earlier this month Tweetdeck announced that they would begin integrating the full Facebook stream into their widely used desktop application. The new version of the application has now gone live and you can view your entire news feed and then implement filters which limit the content to status updates, wall posts, photos, videos, and custom groups of friends. That means your Facebook feed will now sit right next to your Twitter feed … talk about content overload!

Rather than having to log in to Facebook to find out what’s going on with your friends you can quickly filter through TweetDeck…

Router/Twitter/Arduino clock

[Kyle] decided to build the above LED clock for his church. Though it may look impressive enough, it is also hiding loads of features. [Kyle] wanted to make the clock as easy to control as possible, so rather than use buttons or dials to control what is being displayed, he used Twitter. The clock is connected to the internet through a Linksys WRT54GL. The router was hacked so not only does it supply the connection to Twitter, it also parses all of the replies the clock’s feed gets. The clock responds to commands to turn it on or off, run a countdown before service,…

Google Groups Used By Trojan As Command Network

Hackers have programmed a Trojan that uses Google Groups newsgroups to distribute commands. Trojan distribution via newsgroups has existed for more than a decade, but using newsgroups as a command and control channel is a new innovation.
The Grups Trojan itself is quite simple and is only noteworthy for the command and control structure it deploys. The malware is programmed to log into a Chinese language newsgroup to receive commands, Symantec security researcher Gavin O’Gorman writes.
When successfully logged in, the Trojan requests a page from a private newsgroup, escape2sun. The page contains commands for the Trojan to carry out.…

iTunes Has New Facebook Feature But Is Apple Preparing To Take On Facebook Credits?

iTunes may have just taken a massive blow at iLike today with the launch of a “share on Facebook” feature which will enable users to post iTunes songs to their profile. While there are few details about the new feature, there is the potential that actual song samples will eventually be posted to your Facebook feed. Such a move would be a direct attack on iLike who began offering a similar service since Facebook first opened up the stream. While the new “Share on Facebook” feature is extremely valuable, of more interest was a statement by Apple about the number…

Hard Core Nintendo DSI hacking

So, you hacked your DSI did you? Let me guess, you ran a flash cart. No? You probably added some LEDs then right? No? You must be pretty hard core, did you add a NES controler? No? Well what did you do?
We still have no idea what this guy is doing. But he is doing it very meticulously. We found [Micah Dowty]’s photo stream on flicker and we were instantly pulled in. He has done some extensive modifications to his DSI. He has spread its innards for all to see and begun hacking. It appears as though most…

Facebook Adding Stream Clicks To Page Insights

Want to track how many clicks you are getting on those news stories being posted to your Facebook Page? While Facebook hasn’t provided any tool to track clicks yet, there’s one in the works as buzzmarketing daily notes. For now, Facebook will only be providing page administrators with estimated click through rates. While not as useful as tracking every single stream post’s activity, many administrators will be happy to see the new feature.

Facebook describes the new service as follows:

Stream CTR / ETR: This graph is a measure of the Click Through Rate and Engagement Rate for your content…
