Flaming Lips dial down the whimsy on “Embryonic”

NEW YORK (Billboard) – In the wee hours of the morning on Monday, September 14, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne was signing autographs after his band performed at upstate New York’s All Tomorrow’s Parties festival when a burly young fan approached him with a length of industrial strap. Coyne recognized it as one of his own, used for tying down equipment like the large cannons that shoot confetti into the crowd throughout the band’s stage show. The fan told Coyne the strap had been shot out of the cannon and hit him in the chest, but he calmly handed it…

Brand Lift: Facebook’s Answer To The Brand Advertising Conundrum

There are two primary types of online advertising: direct sales marketing and branded ad campaigns. Direct sales models like online affiliate marketing or email marketing have already been proven. However large brands have only begun spending billions of dollars online, because there have been very few ways to monitor the effectiveness of campaigns. Let’s say that you set up a Facebook application which millions of users interacted with. How do you then measure the ROI of that program once it’s complete? Given that large companies spend hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars on advertising everywhere, it’s difficult to…

Facebook Announcing New Advertising Product Tomorrow? (Updated)

Tomorrow afternoon Facebook will make a special announcement at Ad Week NYC and they’ve been promoting the announcement heavily via the Facebook Marketing solutions page. Apparently the live stream will be posted on the page and while no details have been provided regarding the announcement, it sounds as though a new advertising product will be launched or upgrades to the existing ones will be rolled out.

Last week I posted screenshots of the new Facebook ad manager which was being tested out with some advertisers so perhaps the company will be announcing the new service for everybody. Or perhaps we’ll…

Facebook Launching New Prototypes Area In The App Directory

Facebook posted an image earlier today and quickly removed a shot of three upcoming prototype applications via a soon to be added, Facebook Prototypes category in the application directory. The three applications include “Desktop Notifications” which many other blogs have extensively covered, and two applications never covered previously: similar posts and enhanced event emails.

The first application: “similar posts” will most likely let you track which feed stories are similar to one that you are currently viewing. The second applications “Enhanced Event Emails” includes “an iCal file as an attachment to your Event Invitation emails”, letting people put the event…

CIPT1 test closing in on me.

Well it’s been an interesting week for me.  I took a little down time to camp with the kids.  I spent a few days over on Whidbey Island at a camp site on the beach.  It was pretty relaxing but in the back of my mind I knew I had this CIPT1 test coming up.  At any rate, I am not quite thru the Cisco Press book by Dennis Hartmann, I’m actually about 80 pages shy.  I also have the Quick Reference Sheets that I will scan thru tomorrow night before the test on Saturday morning.  Provided I pass with…

Sticky light

With the availability of webcams and projectors, multitouch and interactive demos have become increasingly popular because they’re so easy. Students at the University of Tokyo took a new approach that uses lasers instead. They created Sticky Light, which uses mirrors, a laser, and a single photodetector. Unlike camera-tracking setups, this system requires no visual processing. The laser moves around and bumps into dark objects, sticking to them. It can follow drawings on the table or objects in space, such as shirt designs. They also created a few basic games and a demo that makes sounds based on the movement…

Hundreds Die In Urumqi. Does The World Care?

According to the latest news reports from Urumqi, a far-flung city in western China, “calm” had returned to the streets as the death toll from Sunday’s protests hit 156, with 800 injured, and 1,434 protestors detained.  Officials say most of the dead were Han Chinese, while Uyghur groups report that 90% of those killed were Uyghurs.  Though reports about the ethnic background of those killed and accounts of the protest may vary, one thing is clear.  The Chinese government has cracked down, enforced curfews, and rounded up protestors in an effort to stop future unrest.  Meanwhile,  wall posts from Uyghurs,…

The Past.

Forget the past is not an easy job. But we must realize that the past is not the real thing….There was a saying said that yesterday ended last night. Whether we were successful and failed, that has ended last night. The past was a history and the memory. …The Past is dead and the goods we may not achieve the momentum for tomorrow if we always drag-nyeret past behind us….Unfortunately, not a few people who are still happy (even though they realize without) the past to drag anywhere they go….They like participants in the race marathon that ran with foot…
