LONDON — The British government is moving toward lifting a longstanding ban on product placements in TV shows on commercial networks, in a move that would aid the country’s struggling commercial broadcasters, a person familiar with the matter said Sunday. Ben Bradshaw, secretary of state for culture, media and sport, is expected to explain why he thinks the ban should be lifted in a speech to the Royal Television Society this week. The British Broadcasting Corp., whose TV networks in the U.K. don’t air advertisements, will continue to ban product placements, or deals in which companies pay for a product…
U.K. Reconsiders Ban on Product Placements in TV Shows
Build an analog TV station
With the transition to digital TV, the FCC has abandoned the old analog format. Luckily, you can take advantage of this and set up your own analog TV station. The FCC has a tool on their site to see what channels are open in your area to broadcast in. To broadcast, you need a TV transmitter, but cheap short-range models can be found on eBay or made at home [pdf]. Once you have a transmitter, you can pump in a video source, either your own content or videos from youtube. One group, OMGimontv is showcasing popular youtube clips on…
New Facebook Privacy Policies Will Have A Significant Impact On Platform Applications
As a result of a new privacy agreement with Canada, Facebook has issued statements suggesting that there could be major platform changes ahead for developers. In a blog post this morning, Ethan Beard suggests that users may have to explicitly opt-in to granting profile information. This news comes as Facebook is under increasing scrutiny from privacy advocates including the California ACLU chapter which has released a new quiz application to inform users of what data applications have access to.
In a blog post on the Facebook developers blog today, Ethan Beard writes:
When users authorize an application, they will have…
Experimental search engine display
goodTimes.searchEngine is an experimental set up to display search engine results. Be sure you’re using Firefox or IE, because it isn’t working with chrome right now. [Gordon] pointed us to it and asked for our feedback. We had a pretty quick list of improvements we would like to see, such as the category changes not popping up in new windows, or the new windows appearing on top for that matter. Or most importantly, a way to transition from the fancy preview window to a new tab or window. We are curious to hear your thoughts on this. What would…

Peggy 2 super pixels
[Windell] from Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories took one of their Peggy 2 kits and gave it a little upgrade. The Peggy 2 is a programmable 25×25 LED display. It’s Arduino compatible and can accommodate big 10mm LEDs. Most people assemble them using just one color, but [Windell] decided to create giant RGB pixels by placing discrete red, green, blue, and white LEDs next to each other in the board. This creates a 12.5×12.5 grid of full color pixels. It’s an interesting effect and you should definitely check out the video embedded below which shows how the transition can be…
WTPA bendable sampler
Where’s the Party At is an open source bendable 8-bit sampler kit created by [Todd Bailey]. The initial design started about a year ago when he was instructing circuit benders how to transition to circuit design. He designed the kit to show how simply you could build a sampler. It demonstrates both clear analog and digital design. It’s meant to be a unique instrument though and features a lot of glitchy/quirky characteristics while being fairly reliable. You can read more about the device on his site. It has comprehensive parts and assembly manuals available and the kit is $75.…
