Ubuntu repository crash-course

[Alan] has just posted an Ubuntu screencast that will take you through a crash course in the Ubuntu repositories. If you are new to Ubuntu this will give you a much better grasp on how software repositories are handled.
The different types of updates are discussed: Security updates fix bugs that cause a system vulnerability. Updates (generic) are for bug fixes that aren’t a security threat. Proposed updates are for testing before an update hits the ‘updates’ section. Finally, backports are updates from a newer version that have been ‘backported‘ so systems running older versions of Ubuntu can have…

The 7 Most Important Facebook Stories From Last Week

The past week was a busy one for Facebook. As the company continues to expand both through acquisition and through organic growth, we will continue following it. As we post a fair number of stories each week, and also don’t post every single Facebook story from around the web on this blog everyday, I thought it would be valuable to list those stories that were most important. As such, here are the top 10 stories from the past 7 days starting with Monday August 10th:

1. Facebook Acquires FriendFeed
This was probably the biggest story of the week. Facebook acquired…

Facebook Search: 5 Takeaways From Facebook’s Assault On The Real-Time Web

Yesterday Facebook search went live for all Facebook users and pundits immediately began arguing over this being an attack on Google and an attack on Twitter, but what does this really mean? I’ve had a chance to Facebook’s new search for the past few months and have put the system to the test. Below are five immediate thoughts about what Facebook’s new search means for the future of the real-time web.

Facebook Search Is Finally Relevant
Facebook has been upgrading their search for sometime now but this new version is much more relevant than past iterations. When you search for…

Facebook’s New Pages: What Has Changed?

This is Day 1 of the 30 Days to 3,000 Fans program. You can learn more about the program here.

On March 4th of this year, Facebook released an updated version on what was previously called “Facebook Pages”, then renamed to “Facebook Public Profiles”. While it has been months since the update, the changes are significant enough that I think they’re worth noting. The update essentially transformed the ways that brands could interact with both existing customers as well as potential future customers.

While many described it as a move against Twitter (including myself), the dynamic between Twitter and Facebook…

Facebook Updates Advertising Terms, Displaying User Data Will Require Explicit Authorization

Facebook posted their updated advertising terms last night and ultimately nothing was really that surprising. As far as I can tell, the only addition to the terms was around data and privacy. As previously was the case, developers cannot give any data received from Facebook to any third party. Additionally advertisements that include user data “such as users’ names or profile pictures” will require explicit authorization from Facebook.

So what does that mean? It could mean that many of the ad networks that currently exist on the platform and have good relationships with Facebook could continue to display user information.…

How To: Set Up A New System From Scratch

The question frequently comes up about how to format and install XP from scratch. Following are the steps I take when I get a new system. I mention the “brand names” of software I use not as an endorsement or recommendation, but just for the sake of example. After unpacking and connecting all hardware, here’s what I do: 1. Partition the HD according to my preference, thus deleting everything on the drive (the number and size of partitions is entirely up to the individual user – I prefer several, keeping the OS on c: and various programs, cache folders, swap…

Facebook Starts Disabling Status Updates For Generic Facebook Pages

This evening I’ve been receiving multiple reports from the owners of large “generic” pages that Facebook is systematically disabling the ability of administrators to post status updates. For example the owner of the Facebook Page, “Sex?” let us know that he is no longer able to post status updates from within his page. There are multiple other Page owners that are now contacting us as well. We’ve received information from a number of individuals which are essentially looking to build cross-promotion networks.

Unfortunately that strategy may be in violation of Facebook’s terms and based on Facebook’s activity this evening, it…

Facebook Adds New Feed And Friend Filters

Want to view which of your friends recently updated their profile? It is a feature that was lost with the new Facebook redesign, but as of last night, there are new filters which give you greater access to your friends’ latest activities. On the new Friends page, you can click on the “Recently Updated” filter to view which of your friends recently changed their profile “or recently connected with Facebook Pages.”
What’s most interesting is that this wasn’t added to the homepage and was instead relegated to the Friends page. My guess is that Facebook doesn’t want to generate actual…
