Facebook Lets Users Change Their Username

When Facebook first released the username tool a few weeks ago, they said that you better like the username that you select because you’ll never be able to change it. Now Facebook is modifying that policy to allow users to “change their username once”. It’s pretty easy to switch your username. All you need to do is visit your account settings page and click on “Change” next to the “Username” setting. Facebook will then let you know if the new username you’d like is available.

So why is Facebook letting users change their username now? Facebook hasn’t made an official…

How To Prepare For The Second Facebook Username Land Rush

Tonight Facebook will be opening up usernames to Facebook Pages that have between 100 and 1,000 fans. According to our page statistics tracker that accounts for over 429,000 pages or just over 30 percent of all Facebook Pages. This presents a huge opportunity for those businesses that don’t currently have as large of a following. Page administrators will be able to claim their usernames after 11:59 PM EDT tonight.

Facebook has been making adjustments on the limitation of the number of fans up until the last minute. As of yesterday, those pages with 25 or more fans could register but…

Facebook Adds Alternative Name Display

This evening Facebook added the ability to display your alternative names. Apparently the alternative feature existed previously but I personally was unaware of it. The difference is that now you can actually display that name and as Sophia Huang writes, you can also make it “visible on your profile, in search results, in friend requests, and on other places on the site.” One group that will find this extremely useful is multi-lingual groups, something Sophia Huang happens to be a member of.

Configuring your username is pretty easy. All you need to do is visit your account settings page and…

By filling out the Facebook client username form, there’s a good…

Facesquatting And The 2009 Facebook Username Land Rush Aftermath

Millions of users counted down the seconds to the launch of the Facebook username land rush on Saturday, 12:01 AM EDT. While many journalists had their usernames pre-reserved, those journalists are still waiting for their usernames to process although Facebook says that they are still in the queue to get processed. The more entertaining portion of the night was a phenomenon called facesquatting: the process of stealing a username that another person or brand wanted to use.

That may not be what you thought facesquatting is. If you thought it was something that has a sexual connotation you would be…

Lock In Your Business Name On Facbeook Before Someone Steals It

Facebook has decided to let companies file their trademarks to prevent other users from registering a username that they have rights to. This has been an issue that many Twitter users have seen and the company has found it difficult to manage since they respond to trademark disputes on a case by case basis. Facebook is taking a different approach by letting users fill out a username prevention form. Businesses must have a “registration number” but I’m not sure what number Facebook is looking for.

Is it the registration number of the company or a specific trademark registration number? My…

Facebook Begins Rolling Out Free Profile Usernames For Vanity URLs

This afternoon Facebook posted an image of the new Facebook username settings that should be going live shortly. The image suggests that users will not have to pay for usernames and our assumption is that those usernames will be used within Facebook URLs for creating what many individuals now understand as “vanity URLs”. Facebook has not specified yet how this will be rolled out but it’s now clear that they are being rolled out as posted via the Facebook Platform page.

For some unknown reason, the image has been posted to an album titled “Developer Blog Photos”. Would vanity URLs…
